I am a doughnut

A recent thread revealed that many of us are fans of drama set in Berlin prior to reunification.  It concentrated on Walter Presents but let's open it up.  Who can recommend some good films or series set in this era?

https://purpleport.com/group/general-off-topic/196742/walter-presents----evil--/page/1/

Some which were mentioned in that thread

The Palace

Deutschland 83 and it sequels 86 and 89

Another example (not from Walter Presents) is The Lives of Others

Fans of this genre will understand the title.  JFK's famous Ich bin ein Berliner speech.  Some, mostly English speakers, like to interpret this as "I am a doughnut".  Although it can mean this, native German speakers did not interpret it that way, they interpreted it as intended: as a gesture of solidarity with the Berliners.  Similarly, if a German says: "Ich bin ein Frankfurter", they are not saying "I am a sausage".

There is a good analysis here:

Not strictly speaking a drama I thoroughly enjoyed Kleo on Netflix for a different view of the time period

I knew from the title it was a Kennedy reference. The dynasty has gone to the dogs.

I served in Berlin in the Royal Military Police, before, during and after The Wall and regularly worked in Checkpoint Charlie. It was a special place and a historic time to work there. Definitely one of the best Army postings I did.

There’s a couple of movies that have a Berlin slant that I enjoy. The first is ‘The Package’ staring Gene Hackman and another called ‘Gotcha’ ‘Gotcha’ has a great sequence in the Berlin Citadel, where I booked a Platoon Medieval banquet for an evening. I was told that the German Police had also booked on the same evening and we might want to avoid it as they were usually a bit rowdy. Turns out they didn’t anticipate how a bunch of squaddies, tanked up on Medieval mead enjoy a good food fight after a hearty meal. We were rushed out near the end! 😂

Gotcha trailer

Probably not as dramatic as the one’s cited in the OP.

Babylon Berlin.  The Berlin accents really taught me how poor my German is.

:)

I lived super close to Essen for several years.

There are far worse city names which you can use the same way

Ich pisse aber komme nicht aus Pissen,

:)

...[snipped]...

Understood.

I worked in Berlin several times in the 1970s, so I've seen the wall and Checkpoint Charlie (and I also passed through checkpoints Alpha and Bravo). At the time it felt like an adventure, and nowadays I realise that I saw a slice of history.

My knowledge of German is very limited (very, very, very limited!), and Essen was the only word/city that I could come up with. :)

I worked the Essen Festival a couple of times many years ago. I believe the festival still happens, doesn't it?

Essen is a big city with an important Venue/Trade show centre. Also Essen is big on Carnival.

Pissen is a real place and it means to "piss" :)

Carnival... That's Fasching, isn't it?  The festival - I seem to remember it was held in a huge sports hall.

EDIT: Looked at a map and found Pissen. Looks like it was in the old east. Is that right?
