iceland 2017

Hi guys! Recently I have been having "I'm I just working, paying bills and going to die?" Kinda feeling, I feel like nothing interesting is going on in boring life of an army wife,  so I decided to do something I always wanted is to go to Iceland and take some pictures! I wanted to go on my own as my husband bored of my photography chats lol I have looked up a workshop which is like $4500 , too expensive for me. So I thought to myself why don't I research cool places and just crash somewhere in hotel and during a day snap some unrealistic nature shots! So I was just wondering if anyone else would be interested in joining  me? I thought to go November time but if it's too cold for some ,  we could go in March 2017. I know it's far in advance but I have a lot going on this summer with work.

I shipped a Land Rover Defender camper there and back (in a container) for £1200 total last summer.
All the family flew out with Easyjet to use it.
It costs £250 per day to hire a Defender in Iceland.
If you are army, you must know someone with a Land Rover :).
If you camp, you can do everything else reasonably cheaply.

They all speak English, so there's no problem travelling independently, although some of the roads in the centre require a decent off-roader and some skill and experience.

Hostels cost around £80 per night for a private room - but they are really good - more like a hotel.

Last year summer was late arriving - most of the dirt roads into the interior were still closed in June.

We picked up a Canadian woman of 65 who had been hitch-hiking around Iceland for two months, staying in hostels, she had had a great time. Perfectly safe in Iceland.

People do take bicycles and camp - a bit too tough for me.

2017 is plenty of time to take your driving test  ;)

I shared the costs with 7 other people, we hired 2 cars and stayed in shared accommodation about 4 hours east of Reykavik.  It was a great base for exploring the south, but be prepared for a lot of driving. Total cost was around 500-600 pounds for 6 days ( 2 days were travelling, so we had 4 days shooting/exploring.  You can see the images on my port, we had a great time but it was quite exhausting shooting every day, next time I'd take it a bit easier I think.  Weather sealed lenses and cameras are a big help:)

I might be interested in going again, not sure at the moment though.  We went in October and it was bloody cold:)

Yeah I would expect it being hard work. I'm worried about my cheepy Nikon D5300 to freeze to death so might need to plan for March then. My friend went she said that she was constantly driving as well! I'm very exited tho)

This was 16th of June this year - the road just ended in 4 feet of ice.

I usually go over a few times each year, what dates are you looking at in March?

I would definitely be interested to meet up with a fellow photographer :)

It's not just the cold & road conditions March & November, also consider the short daylight time maybe 5-6 hours

Folks from the south of England are surprised at the difference of daylight times even here in the Highlands of Scotland.  Looking at the longest day of the year, further north in Shetland they have a golf tournament that starts at midnight - the Simmer Dim, it's still so light.

This probably doesn't help at all considering your time frame, but I will be in Iceland sometime december 2016 or jan 2017 xx enjoy your time there in march though, in sure you will get some great opportunities to shoot
