Dress Size Minimum in Casting Call - Help !

I have a bit of a dilemma and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this predicament I have.

I haven’t shot any models for a while (but still very active with a camera(s), but I would like to dabble again to on a collaboration basis.

I am basically looking at doing analogue film (stills) and digital portraits on location around East London/Essex.

I have done literally hundreds of these as collaborations and for a few agencies as well. I would like to think I know what I am doing, and any perspective candidate would get some guaranteed results from me. I do also give very good direction as well (if required). In addition to this I have loads of references, albeit there a bit old now.

I was looking at putting a casting call out, but I am quite specific in the person I am after, which is basically a lady with the right look and a dress size of 12 or under who has a photogenic face and a bit of a “commercial” look.

I don’t want to offend anyone, likewise time is precious for everyone, I don’t really want to waste anyone else’s time in particular my own time.

Should I mention the dreaded dress size in the casting call ???

Thanks in advance.

Your casting should specify as clearly as possible exactly what you are looking for.

If other people choose to take offence that's their problem.

And if people outside those parameters choose to apply, they shouldn't expect to be hired.

As an aside, I've seen quite a few castings flying the "woke" flag, inviting applicants of all genders, orientations, colours and creeds. But look at their portfolios and all the pics are of young slim white girls - go figure.

Absolutely mention it. Worded in a respect way of course, which I’m sure would be the case.

Put it at the top.

No point wasting their time and your own.

I'd be inclined to go one step further and ask for all current accurate stats, this will provide a better idea of proportion, no doubt you have already experienced the odd faux pas in this respect in the 'good old days', I know I most certainly have.

I think you mean size 12 maximum?

Being a ‘bloke’ of a certain age, women’s ’sizes’ remain mysterious, women also tell me there is no consistency either one shop’s  “12” can be another shop’s “10.”

And I do know, having been given a brief tutorial ’top half’ and ‘bottom halves’ aren’t necessarily the same.

Try to give as detailed and precise description as possible and assess the response which could very well include “ I’m a 14 but can look a 12.”

From a models perspective, I think it's important to remember size and appearance doesn't always correlate and as Lightingman mentioned there is often discrepancies between top half and bottom half sizing. Another example is a woman with a very large bust may potentially be a UK 14 in top size to accommodate but their waste could correlate to a typical UK 6 or 8.

Nothing wrong with looking for a specific appearance just bear this in mind ☺️❤️

Definitely, it's your casting, if you know the look you want then you should. It avoids people wasting their time. I pretty much always stipulate a max dress size in a casting.

Of course, but I will be going by the models own pictures to formulate and informed decision etc

Thanks

I've seen plenty of castings for particular clothing sizes, as a model I find it very normal. On any job where clothing is provided it's pretty obvious that a particular size of model is required.

I always stipulate what I want, after all I am paying. When I politely message someone who doesn't fit those criteria, often I get a rude reply and get Blocked. Not worth worrying about, they knew they didn't fit before applying but often they do the "It's not fair" act. I even get messages from people not applying telling me that I am excluding them. Years ago it bothered me. These days when I am paying, I want the images I planned, not spend a day shooting what I don't want for my money.

As others have said, definitely.

I've done so on a few occasions and there's never been any problem.

I don’t tend to apply to castings on PP any longer, but, from a model’s perspective, I’d rather know what the photographer is looking for (be that size, hair colour or anything else) instead of applying and then being rejected. It saves everyone involved a lot of time. So, yes, do state exactly what the requirements are :)
