Models fees for different levels

This will be controversial. I am just putting together my shoot list for Q1 2025, and matching it available budget for shoots.

Can I please have thoughts on why models charge different fees for different levels?

Many models have a fixed fee, but many have a wide range of fees.

The shoot time and travel is the same whether the shoot content is for portrait, fashion or nude.

This I am sure will get controversial, but in today's world of budget control, I thought I woukd throw out the question.

Because models can charge what they like.

Models fees are also subject to supply and demand. The higher the level, typically the higher demand. With that, as models can charge more for higher levels, it can be argued to be shrewd business acumen to do so.

Also, the higher the level a model shoots at, the more vulnerability that comes with it. Either in the risk factor of the shoot itself, or in what images may make it "out into the world". With that increase risk of materials that models wouldn't necessarily want, say, friends and family to see, it is entirely fair and reasonable to expect higher levels of compensation for this.

Frankly, it doesn't really matter why models charge more for different levels - you can either pay the rates they ask for, shoot with somebody else, or go take pictures of landscapes 🤷🏻‍♂️

I prefer it simple. Hourly, Half Day, Full Day rates. The annoying thing about rates is that sometimes once the shoot is booked the model tells you she made a mistake and wants to charge a higher rate. Full Day suits me best, then there is no rushing.

Hi John, I used to charge different rates for different levels to make myself more accessible to photographers who may only want to shoot fashion. As the big argument from the other side was along the lines of "why am I paying nude rates for fashion/portraits" etc, but then I thought one rate is better.

No matter how much or little I'm wearing, I'm still bringing my skills, my looks, my passion, my creativity and professionalism to the shoot, and my time is worth this much, so just a single rate now.

Because they can?

I've been taking photo of models since the 80s and its always been that way.  I remember one famous model saying she only decided to pose nude as she got more money for it.

I guess the idea is they still get work for portraits at a reasonable rate knowing some people will pay more for them to take their clothes off?

Seriously? Do you honestly believe a model should charge the same rate for portraits as for doing nude photos?

Unless they are a super model this has always been the case, and always will be. This isn't at all controversial. I would imagine models who charge one rate regardless of levels start at the rate for nude not at the rates for portrait.

Because they can, and it's all  down to supply and demand.

I have no idea about model charges or rates but I've found that Plumbers charge about £70 per hour, they don't adjust that rate to do a small job like replacing a washer on a tap, or a big technical job like installing a new boiler.

On the other hand with the single rate as I see it, if the photographer is paying one rate which includes all levels then they may just want to get their monies worth.

Though if a photographer only did non-commercial SFW he/she may prefer a rate that suited that. For nudes I think the rate should start at £100+ per hour, because that content will be around forever.

Yep. Same here.  All I need to know is exactly what a shoot is going to cost me.

I like that approach.

.....................................................

Also... When I see different rates for different levels I feel as if I'm being asked to pay in proportion to the amount of skin that's on show. Perhaps I'm being over-sensitive, but that would make me feel a bit grubby.

Supply and demand............

I haven't really found they do charge different rates.

Possibly because I tend to shoot for a day, possibly because I don't shoot "Sexy nude" stuff.

If I want to shoot a model in a particular style or a mix of styles and they agree to shoot with me, I pay whatever they ask plus travel or I decline the proposal.

It is very simple and keeps me happy.

I keep my fee the same. To me I'm working just as hard no matter the level :)

A good point, nude maybe higher levels and deserve a specific charge, but SFW needs clothing and even cheap clothes costs money especially because photographers dislike shooting clothes that you have already used, so that's a new outfit for every shoot, nude is just your birthday suit :-)

This is another.

Both are valid.

I don't mind which way it is - I'm fine with either - just as long as the bottom-line cost to me is affordable for what I want to achieve.

Absolutely!
