Loaded: Lads, Mags & Mayhem

Has anyone else caught this documentary on Loaded magazine on BBC iPlayer?

It covers from the launch of Loaded which, originally, was more centred on 1990's "Lad Culture" but then discusses how FHM effectively ate their lunch. It looks in particular at the infamous shot of Gail Porter that was projected onto the Houses of Parliament, the saturation of the market in the 2000's with Nuts & Zoo before remarking on how the entire genre, along with Page 3, quickly died off in 2015.

It's an interesting watch from our perspective and how attitudes have changed significantly in just a decade.

Lad Culture was a nineties thing for sure, but it explains how a lot of glamour modelling has suddenly gone out of fashion. The weeklies used to pull girls in off the street and they'd pose in lingerie in a nearby studio in a kind of "real girls" feature. There were plenty of willing volunteers back then; today I'd wager you'd struggle to find even one using that method!

No, not seen it. What's it called?

PixelSensation the clue is in the title of the post.

I was a student, photography, film & TV in the early 1990s.

Two of my flatmates, one got Loaded, the other got FHM. Kinda like the whole Oasis vs Blur thing.

I myself thumbed through them as they were scattered around the hovel, I remember the famous Liz Hurley feature in one of them.

Of their time I guess.

A very interesting documentary. I referred to it in one of the recent threads about finding models and changing attitudes to modelling.

They were of their time, but it's interesting how posing nude is almost frowned upon now with new models not wanting to really do it.  Compare that to how Gail Porter's grandmother pushed her to do the FHM shoot (according to the documentary!)

It's still there, just moved to OnlyFans instead?

Yeah but it's all self shot, the quality is not there.

How do you know?  :-)

Gothic Image I've seen enough Insta stories. It just seems odd that they wouldn't let a photographer shoot them and get some nice properly edited images to sell for a much higher price than a smartphone set, with a ring light if you're lucky?

Not really a fan of Loaded but would read Maxim and FHM.

Things have certainly changed.  Most of the female TV/Radio presenters featured in their smalls.  I can't remember the last time seeing the Gail Porter type of shoot, even on outlets like Instagram which most promote themselves on.  Some selfies in holiday bikinis or night out shots, but no studio sessions.

Or I'm looking in the wrong place.

JME Studios models who sell such content have told me that it's precisely because the pictures they shoot of themselves are a bit less polished and a bit more "real" that they sell so well.

Andy McG I was deffo Team FHM and later the two weeklies, though I preferred Nuts to Zoo.

Rachel Stevens of S Club was constantly in it, helped by being voted Sexiest Woman In The World several years running. Although people did legit vote for both the then 16 year old Charlotte Church and The Queen in that poll. 😂

Exactly, OnlyFans is not modelling, it’s exploiting potential stalkers for profit.

As to why those magazines died out, it was never about what you saw but who and the supply of significant people just dried up.

Characterising their target audience as "potential stalkers" is, I suggest, not only unkind, it's also wholly inaccurate.  The models are able to attract members from anywhere in the world, not just their locality, and it fully allows for those with niche interests and tastes to find someone who meets them.

As to the word exploit, it's notable that the magazines exploited the models just as much as the buyers of the magazines, and OnlyFans (and its ilk) have democratised that to a significant extent.  Sure, the platforms make a healthy profit from hosting the content and taking a cut of the money, but there is more competition between similar sites, so content producers get a choice of where to show and sell their content.
