What shall I do for the next few months?

This time last year, I felt burnt out and fell slightly out of love with photography. I only shot wildlife in January, and it took me a long time to get back into my commercial work (portraits, events, branding).

With many of my clients hibernating over the winter, I’m keen to keep shooting and sharing images so that I stay in people’s minds. However, I closed my small studio in the summer, so I’ll need to hire studios or find indoor locations—outdoor shoots in January seem unlikely unless we get a miracle early summer!

I really enjoyed the styled shoot/workshop with Carla and Adrian at Neon Dreams last weekend. I’d love to do more of that kind of thing if suitable venues or concepts come up.

Does anyone have suggestions for how I should spend my time in these dreary winter months? Maybe you know of interesting workshops, collaborations, or studio days that could help me stay productive and creative?

Thanks in advance!

Have you looked at any of Tabitha Boydell's events, perhaps?

I have only ever shot in a commercial once and that was because I needed high ceilings for dance jumps. I have a very small one bedroom house that I do all my shoots in,  unless using location. I even did part of my shoot this week using just available light with my little Fuji XE2 on ISO3200. Dull and cloudy but I think this gave me more of a challenge. Great fun.

Martin, if you don't want to go out in the weather, try remote sessions and shoot from the comfort of your home. Add the word "Remote" to a search, and you'll find many models offer this option. Many models have access to rental studios that are set up for this, as well as in their home studios. It can get pricy, though. I use Shutter App™ for remote sessions internationally and I'm very pleased with the results. Here's an example.

The cold doesn't bother me (anyway) if it's dry. It's when it's mild but moist I struggle.

If it snows, however, I'd say get properly on it!

Just get out and concentrate on how to get the best out of the lenses etc that you have, push the ability of the camera, get to grips with the general environment and try to extract something from nothing. This gives content to then experiment with the editing/processing side when it's raining or you can't get out, as you have nothing to lose, nothing wasted and you'll likely get inspiration from the experience. My 2p.

Find a suitable model and plan ahead to shoot some nudes outdoors when the snow comes?

Works for me.     ;)

Plenty of events and studio days around plus remote options on some days

Feel free to check out my studio where you can shoot remotely from the luxury of your armchair if you wish 😁

Thanks for the shoutout! I do tend to hibernate over winter though!

Martin, if you are interested, I do have some events down South. I have one space left on the 8th Feb https://www.tabithaboydell.co.uk/regal-queens-shoot-essex-stately-home-4-models-8th-feb-2025

Then my next one would be 17th March in Chelmsford https://www.tabithaboydell.co.uk/grande-fete-versailles-5-model-stately-home-shoot-chelmsford-17th-march-2025

I'm nearest to Surrey later in the year though https://www.tabithaboydell.co.uk/moroccan-garden-model-shoot-amazing-location-cotswolds-14th-july-2025

Feel free to check out everything though if you are happy to travel! https://www.tabithaboydell.co.uk/about-my-events

I definitely need to start thinking out of the box and experimenting with non-studio spaces for shooting. Thank you.

Probably one for another debate, but I'm not quite sold on the merits of remote shooting. It doesn't feel like 'proper' photography to me. Just a personal opinion.
