Would something like this work ? https://www.easycomposites.co.uk/6mm-aluminium-honeycomb

In theory yes, but........  this is HOBE = HOllow Before Expansion.

Unless you have the stretching machinery, you will not be able to use it in real life.

I did wonder that myself but there are instructions on the website to make a jig for expanding smaller sheets

Just had a quick search and egg crate diffuser panels  for ceiling light control are about £10 600x600, put a couple of bungees around back of you pop up to hold it i place. The light from such a dish is focused to some degree and really doesn't need too much directional control, you can have it too harsh and to be fair I like gridded light but find standard metal grids a tad on the hard side. If you want to control spill, nothing stopping you wrapping black card around outside of dish to give added control or use a small gridded reflector on low power in addition to create contrast/shadow.

Maybe the easiest solution is to just buy a beauty dish with a grid.

Iirc NickH2 got the pop up due to portability issues originally, though not mentioned here.

But carrying around something made up of 1000 straws hot glued together, strikes me as not the easiest item to transport?

Lightingman not an idea I'd consider either to be fair.

Lightingman I do already have a grid but wanted a tighter holed one.

I've now found some suitable cardboard so will see if that suits my requirements
