Can someone get a consolation trophy for the sore loser here?

not a sore looser at all but it is my opinion that the theme should be followed a bit closer to the title as it seems in many comps there are some shots that come no ware near the theme, take a closer look, yes it is up to the people to interpret the theme as they wish but as I said some are ridiculous and have no representation of the theme, just my opinion.

Equally well it's up to the people voting to decide whether an entry matches their own interpretation of the theme?

It's a cat's life, not a cat. It's an idiom. People can have a cat's life. You don't have to say a cat has a cat's life, it's a cat, it's alive, it's too obvious for comment.

That sounds complicated. Could you go into more detail, please.

Certainly, meow already meow, no need meow, no meow don't meow, but no meow sound like meow so called meow.

Thank you, sir. Now I understand purrfectly.

[See what I did there? Ho; ho; ho.]

I've heard complaints of having a dog's life, but not heard anyone boast of having a cat's life. Is there an example in print?

Lots of them, just read enough books and you'll find them.

I've read a lot of books. No doubt my memory has failed or they were the wrong books.

A great advantage of there being lots of something, whether instances of a phrase or faults in an image, is that it is so very very easy to point out an arbitrary one of them.

I of course believe anything you tell me, but I fear I'd find it hard to convince a third party.

MidgePhoto well, then I stand corrected (although, unless you’ve read every book ever written, the data set is inconclusive) and very clearly this competition was directly asking for a full documentary of the typical lifestyle of a feline condensed into a single image.

On the balance of probability, I’d go with idiom every time. Clearly, the selection of the winning image and the fact the competition is ‘open to interpretation’ means that the de facto interpretation, and thus the final meaning of the competition’s theme was, in fact, the idiom and not the literal.

The competitions are just another of Purpleport's "LOOK AT ME" mechanisms, albeit with a reward and a bit more structured (like some of the games could stand to be).

As such, getting upset about much more than egregious violations of the SFW game rule seem a bit of a waste of time. Bring back the small plate of tomatoes, I say.

The winning image is very good.

The competition was:

The competition theme is A cat's life.

It's up to you to interpret the theme and either submit an existing image or get your thinking cap on and shoot an image specifically for this competition.

"A cat is a fury 4 legged animal very cute in most cases" - no, you are not thinking laterally, which people are allowed to do on a model site where models and actors "portray other things".

People call a catalytic convertor a "cat" - someone could have created an image of one being stolen off a car

Catwoman is an incredibly obvious version of cat that people will use, it is a film and comic book character known for the feline characteristics

Cat burglar is another well known term

Cat is a shortened name for a cat o nine tails whip

There are plenty of other things I am sure people can come up with given the motivation, which is what the competition is encouraging

There is way too much camera club thinking going on here, where I am sure someone would write a half page set of detailed rules on what people should and should not do rather than give them three words and say it is up to YOU to interpret it

I happened to be in Barcelona for entirely other reasons, and coincided with an early stage of the Americas Cup.

All the boats racing in it were twin hulls (on foils)

IE "cats".

I didn't enter the picture of Brittania being hoisted in but it looks a hard life.

If the OP cared to put the image of a feline he entered in the competition into the Single Image Critique forum he might learn something to his advantage.
