"Free" rarely encourages commitment.

Absolutely, it has no perceived value nor worth, about the same as a Mexican drug dealer gives to life.

A rather cynical view as some of the west's greatest art has been made and written by people who pursued their chosen activity for the love of it. As Oscar Wilde would put it, a cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

We used to give quality costly to produce marketing material for free, it was usually left in a heap on the floor in the corner of the offices. When we charged for it, they put it in a locked cabinet and made sure it was given to suitable potential customers.....

I would agree with you with material things, few people respect things that they are not desperate for that they get for nothing. I was thinking more of people who pursue an activity for the joy of it and that could be photographer or model. I suspect though, that most people have been let down by people where money is involved, while on the other hand, worked with motivated people for nothing. I know in my experience, the involvement of money or not doesn't seem a measure of the quality of person, there doesn't seem to be a pattern. Not been back into model photography long enough to know if things have changed since the last time I was doing model photography. Rates certainly seem to have gone up a lot, certainly this side of the water but I'm not committed to model photography, though I do enjoy it.

Hiya Folk, thanks for your kind replies which I see are based on experience.

Our Pure TFP Liverpool event yesterday went better than I had hoped.

Fantastic folks, memories and images.

The running total based upon my thread theme = on the day = Two more models did not attend + one photographer too (sent a message...car broke down 1 hour before arrival time) no message though from the two models...not even 'my partner is taking me to Mexico for the weekend'.

Outcome, the event was a success.

Quandaries, if I give one model a negative reference I will on fairness need to give all the same 'did not attend' / 'No Show' but I think on how this may affect the persons journey in modelling / photography...maybe it will stop it progressing.

Maybe they do not realise the input required to run a TFP event and the domino effect it can have on it by last minute cancellations < 3 days.

Further quandaries...should I provide this negative feedback to help future photographers / models potentially save time and money.

On this one I have decided not to provide a negative reference i.e. 'Late Cancellation / No show for all who could not attend, even the ones who did not even send me a message.

I could not take a chance on them in the future, which is negative for me probably more so for them.

But...I am taking on board your feedback and this may change my approach on future shoots / events I do.

Thanks again :-)

If the shoot was booked in the models’ calendars and they didn’t turn up or cancelled late, then yes, you should absolutely leave the correct reference.

It will indeed affect their journey or stop it progressing, but whose fault is that?

You are saying that you will not take a chance on these models in the future. However, you are denying other photographers the information they need as to whether they should take a chance on them.

Chris Barral so you post on here expecting sympathy, but you won’t leave appropriate references because you are happy for them to do the same to others?

They will confirm their shoot

But just over three days out from the event...they disappear like mist in the morning.

Hello?

Are you coming?

Helloooo?

The most popular reason given is 'I have just been offered a fantastic opportunity'...

The question is: does the model consider your event to be a fantastic opportunity?

Yep looks like a case of carry on camping....

Hi Folks, just a quick ongoing update.

For late cancellations and camping on.

No sympathy required, only read if interested or really bored.

I have used your kind feedback to employ the £10 refundable deposit for models to secure their place on my latest event.

£monies tight at the moment, £10 is still a lot for folks who may not have it.

I think that has been a problem.

Wanting to come but not being able to pay the £10 refundable deposit is a problem.

Camping On is still there, which is you pop yourself down on an event as attending but with no intention of coming.

Why would you?

If you might be pop yourself down as a maybe.

Happy Tuesday folks.

We live in a money age and things without a monetary tag, are often deemed inferior even when they are superior. The idea that the professional must be better, when professional and amateur doesn't measure quality but different approaches and motivations. Back in the day when I left art college, people used to help each other for nothing and people would model, even nude, out of interest or for the kick of it. Looking at my students, that is no longer the case, money seems to be the greater motivator than interest on the whole.

^ This.

In Spades.

Even here, on PP!

Chris Barral I would always ask for DMs when it comes to event attendance. If I considered everyone who clicked attending as a dead cert I would make a loss on my events!

Hiya folks, I'm back with an update on the phenomenon which is event 'camping on'.

I have an event happening now that a new PP member has popped themselves down as attending.

I let them know in the event thread, I'm not able to msg them they are a new member.

That unfortunately they could not attend because they are male abd it was a casting call for female models.

Subsequently he did not take himself off attending the event but has been interacting on the event thread plus attendees.

I let PP know and asked for help.

PP let me know that there is no problem.

I don't get it, a PP member on an event page, down as attending but the wrong gender - what could be wrong with that.

It does not show current and perspective attendees reality.

Plus a new male model could they not interact via nornal PP functionality - search, who's on the site?

It seems 'Strange'.

Hey ho there you go.

p.s I love PP.

Chris Barral to be fair it doesn’t specify female models only on your event

Photowallah said, 1655992361

I still don't understand what this has to do with camping.

Chris Barral said, 1655992458

The casting specified female models on its set-up.

As you are aware you have to specify.

It is noted on the casting.

It is noted on the model page.

But thanks for your feedback.

It's always warmly received.

I will review again.

Maybe we can all do a bit of random 'camping on'.
