Life Models - Covid-19 Class / Group Cancellation and Impact to Income?

I have been thinking about this but have not posted.  Today, I got an e-mail from a model friend who said his life drawing classes in the US are getting cancelled due to Covid-19.

In cities where art models can actually have enough bookings and make a living modelling for classes (e.g. London, NY, Boston), this has to be tough - especially right before the summer low.

What are you guys seeing in the UK?  (I live in the US but I put London as my location since I have plans to go there in May - if Covid-19 is under control by then.)  What are your plans if you are in this situation?

Thanks.

I'm in the Netherland and the government is a little pointless, clearly more concerned with the economy and pretending everything is fine rather than leading. People and organisations are being left to their own devices for the most part. My local polytechnic has closed against government advice and the local health authority said it can't cope at the current low rate of infection. It has not helped that for the last 10 years there's been a rightwing government which believed in making everything so efficient and privatised healthcare and insurance, everything is now so efficient and expensive, a spike in common flu stretches resources, never mind this virus.

Everything is patchy and people are making their own decisions. I've got a life model staying with me for a few days soon. She could be bringing the virus as she is coming from the metropolitan area. Can't stop drawing, might as well stop living.

As a photographer I took the decision a couple of weeks back to postpone shoots for the foreseeable future.  My last one was Thursday.  However I'm pals with a good few models, and pretty much everyone I speak to (not solely those who work for art classes) are seeing a drop in bookings.  I feel bad for many models who make a living out of modelling for photographers.  There's a trend here for models to substitute Only Fans subscriptions for more conventional modelling fees, (and sadly a fair amount of general bad mouthing of photographers - some of whom deserve bad mouthing it has to be said) but it's a shame for those who still make a fair proportion of their income from the amateur (and I suspect professional) photography market.  I'm sure a few models will be along soon with a view from the other side of the lens / pad...

The UK seems to be following a policy that people must be allowed to develop immunity .... so it's likely that 60% of the population will eventually be infected.  Fine, except that this could theoretically lead to up to 1,000,000 deaths.

In Spain there is a different policy!

SPAIN’S STATE OF EMERGENCY UPGRADED TO STATE OF ALARM

The Spanish government has decreed a ‘state of alarm’ across the entire country in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

As of today, Saturday, freedom of movement will be severely restricted with citizens required to stay at home for the next 15 days.

All of Spain’s regions and autonomous communities will be put under upgraded status of
Alarm

SPAIN PUTS ENTIRE COUNTRY IN LOCKDOWN CONFINING CITIZENS TO THEIR HOMES EXCEPT FOR THESE 8 REASONS
Officers will be given special powers to make 'checks' on people, goods, vehicles, buildings and establishments while the state of alarm is in effect
SPAIN’S government has decreed a ‘state of alarm’ across the entire country in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

As of today, Saturday, freedom of movement will be severely restricted with citizens required to stay at home for the next 15 days.

All of Spain’s regions and autonomous communities will be put under direct government control, including local police forces.

Officers will be given special powers to make ‘checks’ on people, goods, vehicles, buildings and establishments while the state of alarm is in effect.

The Royal Decree issued today says citizens will only be able to use public roads for the following reasons:

1 Acquisition of food, pharmaceuticals and basic necessities.
2
Visits to health centres.
3
Travel to the workplace to perform work or business-related activities.
4
Return to the place of habitual residence.
5
Assistance and care for the elderly, minors, dependents, people with disabilities or especially vulnerable people.
6
Visits to financial entities.
Due to force or need.
7
Any other activity of an analogous nature duly justified.
8
The circulation of private vehicles on public roads will only be allowed to carry out the aforementioned activities, or to refuel at petrol stations.

The state of alarm puts all security forces, including the Catalonian Mossos, the Basque Ertzaintza and the local police under the authority of the Interior Ministry.
the army may be drafted in if necessary.

The short term income of life models or other occupations here is of secondary importance to the containment of the virus.

My aunties friend from work visited family in Italy. And he sent her a video of the police driving around. Enforcing the curfew and he had to get a special letter from the police to fly back to the UK. But once he arrived at the airport here he was able to just walk through. No special checks or requirements. Which is absolutely crazy as he's been in Italy.

Unbelievable really isn't it.

DJ200 it is shocking that no checks are being made. At airports and docks and people are surprised at how it has spread across the world. I know it will sadly have a very big negative impact on the travel industry but stopping all non essential foreign travel would a bit.

I wouldn't be concerned with 1-1 shoots since you can quite easy take necessary precautions, but group shoots just doesn't seem like a good idea at the moment.

Bet if he'd have come in from Tennerife with an extra carton of fags, they'd have been on him like a rash..

The previous government was not rightwing with the PvdA (similar to Labour) in it. They were pulled accross the table and even enjoyed that looking at the faces of Lodewijk Asscher (de gluiper/slybooths) and Jette Klijnmsa (ziel verkocht/sold her soul) only with Martijn van Rijn I feel for what he had to endure.

So much was destroyed in the past years, and still is, that it will take generations to undo that if we even manage that ever.

In the meantime the government has closed everything down for three weeks. The PM, a man with no active memory, did not dare to show up when that was made public.

That PM is the same one that led the Netherlands to it's demise.

Sorry this thread quickly became a government policy and border control discussion...  Now with the economy slowing down, market crashing and less disposable income, I wonder how it will impact discretionary spending like OnlyFans.  Hopefully this gets under control soon and we see a quick bounce-back by the summer.

mmmfotografie.nl Yes, they did a Tony Blair and embraced neoliberalism, which is why only a few idiots still vote for them. We can blame the VVD but the real guilty politicians are those who agree to work with the VVD.

DJ200 "come in from Tennerife with an extra carton of fags"

What!?

This century until December we can come in with an unlimited quantity of cigarettes, provided we can plausibly say they are for personal use rather than an import business.

There isn't a customs barrier or regime.

Because it is in the EU, and we retain most of the privileges of membership until then.

There has been some discussion of this topic in recent years.

After December, yes, the vote to impose rashes may cause such troubles and annoyances.

(Isn't duty and therefore price rather similar though, leading to little point in doing that?)
