Split the Games group

Arising from https://purpleport.com/group/general-chat/197339/Suspended-from-the-games, please split the https://purpleport.com/group/games/ group.

There are two easily-identified types of post in there:

  1. Post your own image on a particular theme.  These form the bulk of the group, and drown out the others.  Having posted in a few of them myself, I have observed that:
    1. There are rarely any images in the page or two above me which inspire me such that I want to show them any Love.  To be honest, I often find the Random images more inspiring!
    2. I very rarely get any interaction on my image.  This may well align with the previous point, or it might be a sign that people tend to use this type of post as a write-only medium.  There are already plenty of places to do that, but hey, each to their own.
  2. Post from the previous poster.  These were the original games, brought across from net-model days.  They encourage positive interaction between members.
Putting these into a new group such as https://purpleport.com/group/from-the-previous-poster/ would allow people to focus on the type of games which interests them more.  It's quite possible that some people would hide the first group and show only these, which would improve the participation in them.
I know of a number of games which would fit here:

There are other "games", of course, such as song titles, word association, and "post something similar".  Given that these are all predicated on at least looking at the previous post, I suggest that they belong in the second group.

The downside of starting a second group is the take-up.  Given that it's splitting a group which is already well-subscribed, I'll ask that Admin auto-subscribe everyone to it and move the few games to it.

Russ Freeman Could this be done, please?

Just to highlight the main motivating factor which drove me to make this suggestion:

I'm not sure I've really understood your point, but I suspect it's sensible.  I have an alternative (or additional) suggestion.  As I mentioned previously I left Games simply is it drowned recent group discussions  Would it be possible to have (or is there already) a 'Recent Games Posts' gadget, ( and crucially)a bit of logic added to Recent Group Discussions to permanently exclude Games posts, whether or not you're a member of games?

Isn't that rather self-defeating? Surely if you're a member of a group you want to see what's happening in it, otherwise as Sensual Art says above, it becomes a write-only group?

Did you see Mick's question https://purpleport.com/group/general-chat/197339/-Suspended-from-the-games--------/page/2#gr3935265 ? That might achieve what you want.

I didn't think it did 'cos of my suggestion of having a specific gadget to view games posts.  Which anyone could then add to their homepage?

I did but didn't spot the favourites bit.  So yes, I guess would solve the 'Recent Group Discussions' part (I wasn't aware of 'favourites).  The lack of my theoretical games widget wouldn't allow the Games to be posted on someone's homepage if they wanted them segregated, but I suspect that's not an issue for gamesophiles....

Has Games got its own widget?

If so, remove Games posts from Recent Group Threads and just host them in the Games Widget.

If not ... why not create one ... it can't be *that* difficult surely?

Surely, if people wanted certain groups, then ipso facto they would be popular and busy. If they lie dormant, doesn’t that mean the majority don’t use them, and therefore they’re not popular? I really don’t see why splitting games into groups would change that, in my honest opinion. You’re (as far as I’m aware) able to post in any group you wish—that wouldn’t change with the requested updates, unless I’m missing something. Sorry if I am.

I dropped out of the Games group long ago.  Partly because I inadvertently upset some people but also because some viewed it as begging for love.  I might be slightly more likely to rejoin your second proposed group.  However, it would probably be too slight to pass the threshold of actually rejoining.

I would like to see Share a Shoot revitalised.  It seems to be a UDP group these days.

Yep. And one can hide any thread that one doesn't wish to see.

Unless I'm also missing something (far from unknown, I'm afraid :(), I don't see why any change is necessary.

I was thinking that.  I don't see that hiding the popular groups would increase the popularity of the less popular ones?

Do you mean home page Gadget?

No, because it's "just a group", just like any other group.  What you're suggesting would be a lot of development work to make it be something different.

Sure, I can hide one particular group post, such as "Flash your latest pic".  And another post such as "Your most viewed picture today".  And hundreds of other similar posts.  That way, I can reduce the visible posts to just those which I want to see.  That's quite a lot of effort on my part.  I've done a lot of them already.

And so can the next person who has similar preferences.  And the next person.  And the next person.

Splitting the two - very different - sets of posts into different groups allows for the choice to be made much more simply, with far less effort by most people (and indeed most people won't care either way).

I was't referring to hiding individual posts. I referred to hiding any individual thread that one doesn't wish to see. Takes only a split second.

Anyone who feels - as I do - that the recent posts are all "me, me, me" type "post your own image" but takes the step of unsubscribing from the Games group altogether will currently have a rather more negative view of the groups overall.

To those people (the ones who feel as I do, that the original "from the previous poster" games were much more inclusive, constructive, and positive towards the site's goal of being a good place to network with other creatives) the split will make the site be a nicer, more positive place.

We used to have a fair amount of participation in the "from the previous poster" games, but now they're pretty much drowned out there's very little.  It is my assertion that the suggested split would bring those participants back.

Sorry, but to me, it seems like you’re asking for a massive change that could easily be avoided by simply scrolling past and ignoring posts that don’t interest you. Everyone on this site has different interests, and the forum contains posts that cater to all of them. If a post or group is appearing often enough to annoy you, it’s because it’s popular—and you have the choice to scroll past it, just like anyone else. scrolling really is not that difficult in my honest opinion.
