Milton Keynes - 9th March 2019

We see an old picture of movie star. What immediately makes us think ‘Hollywood’? The trademark of a Hollywood-style portrait is unmistakable - but not all the images from the Golden Age of Hollywood are shot in the same way. Variations in lighting, angles, posing, props and styling all exist within the genre. On this one-day course, we cover all these topics so that you can create inspired portraiture with a flavour of yesteryear’s Hollywood glamour.

We begin with an analysis of some classic portraits: iconic images of stars who appeared on stage and screen in the 1940s and ‘50s. Having identified the key elements that place them under the Hollywood umbrella, we begin what might be called a homage to the likes of George Hurrell, C.S.Bull, Bert Six and Eugene Robert Richee - the body of photographers who were the inspiration for this course. They battled with plate cameras and enormous lights on the sound stages of Paramount and MGM. We, of course, don’t have to. Our challenge is to simulate the effects they achieved using modern technology.

With a clear understanding of our goal, we bring on Sharon, our model, fully-styled with outfit, hair and make-up appropriate to the period. She is very experienced in the Hollywood modelling genre and able to deliver the poses and expressions in keeping with the mood of the shot. Over the course of three different sets, you will learn to use speed lights, constant ‘hot’ light and studio flash to simulate a range of Hollywood looks. We limit numbers to 8 photographers so there’s plenty of hands-on shoot time. By the end of the practical session, you will have a variety of shots in your camera and will be ready to delve into post-processing.

This final part of the day is devoted to working with Lightroom and Photoshop. You will learn to use techniques and recommended plugins which give your images the spirit and character of Hollywood portraiture. The aim is not to faithfully replicate the works of the great photographers of the age; rather, they provide you with the inspiration for your own images. This course enables you to get creative, Hollywood style.
