Avatar images on PurplePort should be Suitable for Work (SFW)

By Russ Freeman, written 1544012937

When we started PurplePort, we didn't mind which image you chose as your avatar as long as it was appropriate for your account (e.g. if you are a photographer, you must have taken/made it).

However, over time, we noticed that people often did not enable the Adult image safety filter, so we adapted our avatar policy so that adult-style images could not be used as avatars. Similarly, we realised that visitors browsing PurplePort without toggling the image safety filters saw Image Filter Enabled placeholders instead of our members' beautiful avatars.

To improve our visitors' experience of PurplePort (who may well become future creatives in our community), we altered our avatar policy once again, this time so that avatars could only be SFW images. Our competitors already do this, so really, we are just aligning with them.

What is Suitable for Work (SFW)?

On PurplePort, we have three safety settings (Suitable for Work (SFW), Not Suitable for Work (NSFW), and Adult) that are applied to all uploaded images. These settings allow anyone (including visitors to our site) to filter out certain images (e.g. lingerie, nudity, gore, etc.). Our Image Upload Guidelines list the criteria for each to help you determine which settings to apply to your images.

For an image to be marked as SFW:

  • it must not meet the criteria for NSFW or Adult (see our Image Upload Guidelines)
  • it should be suitable for viewing at work or in a public place (such as a library)

How to change your avatar to a SFW image

First, you need a SFW image in your portfolio that you can use as your avatar (either find a SFW image in your portfolio or upload a new image that is SFW).

Then, set that image as your avatar (view the image, and from the grey cog (top right), click Use as avatar).

What happens if you don't change your avatar to a SFW image?

Others will see a temporary placeholder until you change your avatar to a SFW image. If you don't change your avatar soon, we'll automatically choose an image for you.
