The Beauty Myth

A reflection (pardon the pun) on Naomi Wolf's ground breaking book, The Beauty Myth, which examines what determines our society's version of what is "beautiful". Wolf uses the word myth in the sense of something that is widely believed but untrue. Joseph Campbell on the other hand sees a myth as an essential truth about a particular era, drawing on essential characteristics of what it means to be human. Lucrative fashion, cosmetic, dieting and entertainment businesses have created narrow visions of what beauty means, but on the other hand beauty itself is a universal archetype.
