This puts me in mind of the quote from Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, immortalised in the cult film Apocalypse now, where the words are uttered by the insane Col Kurtz.
The full quote is
"I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror--of an intense and hopeless despair.
