Welcome to J9 Studios!

The studio is primarily a place where either myself (Jay Jewell), Jordaaan and other trustees can shoot. I don't actively promote the studio to others, but will occasionally allow the studio to be used by people not known to myself or fellow trustees.

If you are new to the studio, either myself, John (Orpentor) or one of my other trustees will be present until we are comfortable you're able to fly solo. Similarly, if you have less than 10 positive references OR any negative references, then one of us will be present throughout the shoot - please note that this is not up for debate, so go somewhere else if you have a problem with this.

*COVID Notes*

The studio has a good UV filter that should make up for the lack of natural ventilation (there are no windows). Regarding face masks etc, it's down to individuals to take whatever precautions they feel are necessary. We do strongly recommend that people do a LFT the night before a shoot and cancel if needed. As far as the Studio is concerned, there is no penalty for cancelling, so long as you inform myself or John before we set off to open up.

As for the studio itself, it's 8x5m (26'x16') with a high 4m (13') ceiling. It's fully enclosed with no windows, allowing you full control over the lighting! The old building the studio resides in boasts corridors galore, a wide stairwell, a lift, fire escapes, large windows, cargo containers, and the exterior is red brick. Please note we share the building with numerous other businesses, including a busy MOT garage on the ground floor, and so please be respectful when shooting onsite, but outside of the studio.

Studio Equipment & Props

Five Bowens Gemini lamps, ranging from their 200 to 500 models, triggered using two Pocketwizards, one for your camera and the other attached to the main lamp - additional lamps triggered via being slaved. Various softboxes, umbrellas, beauty dishes, reflectors, snoots, barn doors and other modifiers. We've 3 wall mounted backdrop systems, with black, white and grey rolls. There is also a mottled grey curtain too. All equipment must remain inside the studio, but you're welcome to bring your own portable gear and shoot within, or around much of the building.

As for props, there are numerous stools, chairs and a large sofa. There are plenty of clothes and accessories on racks or lying around that can be used freely, although there are some clothing items that are off limits, and we'll point those out on the day. Likewise, the Big White Box is off limits.

Accessibility & Hours

  • Photoshoots by arrangement only, no walk ins.
  • Car park outside.
  • Working lift to first floor where studio is situated, or a large stairwell if you prefer.
  • Wheelchair accessible toilet right next to the studio.

Security & Model Safety

  • The model's changing room is a curtained off area not dissimilar to what you might find in a retail store. Photographers are prohibited from entering the changing room at any time, unless requested by the model; similarly, whilst a model is changing, photographers are not allowed in that general vicinity.
  • If you have less than 10 positive references, have any negative references, or the model requests us to chaperone - then either myself or John will sit in on the shoot.
  • The building has CCTV throughout, although there are no surveillance cameras inside the studio. People will have read about the MET photographer who used hidden cameras to spy on models whilst they were changing. No photographer will have access to this prior to the shoot, but we strongly advise models to make a mental note of everything in the changing room, so they can spot if something got added during a toilet/cigarette break.
  • We reserve the right to refuse shoots based on negative references.
  • Unprofessional behaviour will not be tolerated, and will result in the shoot being terminated.
  • In light of the growing number of spiking incidents we see on the news, we recommend models either bring their own drinks, OR accompany photographers to the kitchen to make drinks.
