Remote shoot questions....

I am relatively new to Purpleport (joined in the latter half of 2023), but been on  other sites for a while. I'm an amateur photographer. I'm becoming more interested and likely to do remote shoots and I have a few questions... The main question being is how does it work from my end of things. i do have lightroom and ON1 Photo RAW both of which it looks like can do tethered shoots - but only if the camera is attached to my computer (something I can't do if I'm here in the Eastern U.S. and the model is in Europe or a totally different part of the U.S. for example).

Is it that the model and I would have to connect with something like Zoom or other conferencing software that would allow for controlling the screen and therefore their software. I'd imaging that, while perhaps convenient, being able to use software that's sitting in my computer to directly control the camera would pose some issues (while most people would only do so with permission, and so forth,  I suppose there are those who have less than nice motives).

Hi Adam,

Welcome to Pp! I hope you're enjoying your time here :)

I shoot remotely frequently and host to the US with multiple different photographers. I use Capture One Pro and link to my Nikon D750 camera, from your end you only need Zoom because I have the software on my laptop and I share the screen with you and give you control, so you can operate the software (Capture One). This software reflects what the live view on the camera would look like, so you have access to all of the settings that you normally would.

You really don't need anything besides Zoom and the ability to communicate on your end. Here is a casting of mine that explains things in more depth: https://purpleport.com/castings/486776/Tethered-Shoots-Worldwide--/ :)

I've also link my remote shoot album here so you can see images I've shot remotely with photographers from all around the world: https://purpleport.com/portfolio-image-album.asp?id=140956 :)

If you're interested in trying a remote shoot or have any further questions, don't hesitate to message me! :)

Angel Black UK what a helpful reply, thanks. Interestingly does this Capture 1 function on wifi at your end too, or is your camera a hardwired connection only? I'm trying to establish if it can be set up wirelessly. I've been using C1 for 14yrs firewire in the past and have latest version and wifi camera but never used zoom. Thanks.

Personally, I'd advise against connecting a camera with WiFi if you're doing a remote shoot unless the laptop is hardwired to the Internet. Sharing bandwidth isn't a good idea.

indemnity you're welcome. I tether the laptop and camera with an actual cable. Sure, theoretically it could be done wirelessly but that would significantly slow the process down. The laptop & camera are constantly talking to each other, so asking them to that wirelessly is probably expecting too much to be honest. Your best bet is to get a tethering cable and tether that way. Although, if you were just tethering to show models what you were capturing in the moment rather than for a remote shoot in the capacity that I'm referring to, it'd probably be alright, although again, likely laggy :)

Gothic Image thanks Andy, was thinking of only transferring sml jpeg on tether. As you know having issues with 1394 connection with MF back.

Angel Black UK thanks for the reply, as mentioned above on my WiFi camera I was thinking of transferring sml file and keeping RAW on card.

I'll give it a go and have a play with both ways, just not used zoom yet. Thanks.

Before I had to close down, I had a remote system at my studio at the request of a couple of member photographers who had moved to another state. They were full-on studio sessions, but it took at least one assistant to move the camera, lights, and other equipment. The models were a couple of our regular staff models. The photographers were using Zoom and there were audio/visual delays, so there was an additional learning curve there. The remote sessions were OK, but the equipment was very expensive and probably not affordable for a new photographer or model just starting out. I'm sure things have gotten better with the addition of pan and tilt controls on the camera, but it's still an expensive proposition, and I was not impressed.

After I closed my studio, I stumbled onto a remote system, Shutter App™, that uses modern cellphone cameras controlled via a web portal. It's free. I am now converted, and my principal sessions are all remote, mostly in the UK and Europe from my home in Florida. Do a Google search for it, I'm very impressed with it.

Agree with StudioOneRemote , I have executed more than 50 remote photoshoots using the camera of the model's smartphone. As a photographer, it's an interesting challenge, for me, it started as an experiment but then I found it very useful for working with people all around the world. I have used both The Shutter App, and CLOS App. If you are curious about the results working with the model's smartphone, you can check my result in this album: https://purpleport.com/portfolio-image-album.asp?id=187541 (Remote Photoshoots with smartphone).

If you are curious about some tips for remote photoshooting with smartphone, don't hesitate in sending me a message. I am here to help.

Ricardo.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I know I haven't been much on the groups here lately. I actually worked with a model remotely who uses Shutter App. When I have time I will look at CLOS App and see if it might also be useful.

Ricardo, I haven't looked at all the photos in the album yet - but they're amazing!

Hi Adam, like Angel who has left super helpful & informative comments above, I’m also a model in the UK who still does many remote shoots.

I tether my Nikon D850 to my laptop and use camera software called Digicam Control, where you can see the camera live view screen, change my camera settings, focus & press the shutter.

I prefer to hand over control of my laptop to the photographer via free screen sharing software - I find either Anydesk or TeamViewer work really well. To communicate during the shoot, I tend to video call the photographer using WhatsApp or FaceTime.

I know you can share your laptop screen and communicate simultaneously via Zoom, but I find can slow everything down a little so I prefer to communicate on a separate device like my phone. And it means I can move the phone around to show you the whole set on the video call, not just the view down my camera lens..

So for remote shoots with me, the photographer will only need a WiFi connection, their phone and either Anydesk or TeamViewer installed on their laptop / computer. I have both installed in the rare instance one of them is experiencing problems.

I haven’t done any remote shoots using just my phone, but to be honest I don’t particularly like the thought of it, especially when remote shooting with my camera is so efficient & the RAWs are high quality.

Hope that helps.. always happy to answer any specific questions :)

Hey, Chiara! I found The Shutter App and Shutter Studio portal last year and i was very skeptical until I actually used it with models who actually use it. I ran a fully equipped professional rental studio for 18 years until a sudden disability cut that short. I still go on location for my high-volume commercial sessions with several thousand dollars worth of equipment, but for my personal work internationally,  Shutter App and Shutter Studio are perfectly adequate for me. Just my $0.02! Lol!
