Will you be publicising this preference - say in a new Admin thread, and on the blog - or leaving it to fail because no-one knows that this is the new thing to do?

As I said, I'd like to see people using it right now by copying and quoting and creating a new post using existing tools.

If someone wishes to make a new post describing their technique. Maybe some wrinkles in the technique will be ironed out before any code is changed.

My method for creating this post was:

  1. Open the thread that I want to reply to, in this case https://purpleport.com/group/bugs-errors-suggestions/196788/Bud-off-a-stub/page/2/
  2. Go to the reply that I want to respond to, in this case https://purpleport.com/group/bugs-errors-suggestions/196788/Bud-off-a-stub/page/2#gr3918271 (using the Link function to get that URL)
  3. Click Reply
  4. From the text box, Select All and Cut
  5. From the + at the top of the page, A new group post
  6. Choose the group
  7. Enter a new title
  8. Paste the content that I cut earlier including the reply as a quote
  9. Add the "here" link manually
  10. Add my text below it.

My concern is how difficult it will be for mobile users, given copy and paste isn't the easiest of things to do.

If the technique gains traction then we will make it easier to do.

I was very tempted to do exactly this on a recent thread, maybe half an hour before you made the suggestion.

Easy enough to do, and should prevent off-topic

Select, copy, paste using the phone.

Usable.

But no link back for context.

I think it's safe to say very few people will be arsed to do that

Whereas if it were a simple "Off-topic reply" button rather than "Reply", they would.  The result could all be done by the site's code.

I think the forward breadcrumb trail is essential, and the reverse breadcrumb trail is moderately important.

In the immediate term after posting, possibly, but when coming back to a thread months or years later (via searching) I'd maintain that the reverse link would be the more important.

Strange how my comment regarding the text editor has been deleted from the other thread, given that it highlighted the difficulties of using copy and paste on mobile devices.

Exactly.

Copy and paste (or at least accurately selecting text) is certainly tricky for some people on some phones.

I think hyperlinks are created if paste a path using the "Desktop site" or equivalent menu option (should accessibly via a menu in your mobile browser)
