After two weeks with the new hand grinder and the fixed plunger I'm getting so much better results at home even with a really lazy method, the grinder has easily paid for itself in terms of its impact on my coffee shop outgoings. I've just stayed home and drunk my own coffee, which has also seen me eat less cake and fewer expensive lunches.
I have been reading about what the flow control unit actually achieves -- more oils and the increased practicality of pressing small drinks -- but I still haven't gone for it. Did you?
Basically I use a lazy fill-up-to-number-four-and-wait-a-couple-of-minutes method, so the initial drip through before the plunger is inserted has no impact. So I think the only difference would be more oils and maybe the fruitier flavours.
I would perhaps bother if I was pressing really short drinks, but I'm not really in a rush -- might treat myself at Christmas though, and see what it can do.
I'd probably get more consistency out of scales with a timer but again, I'm not really sure this kind of process does much for me.
The grinder was definitely a variable worth improving on, though; the consistency is absolutely more obvious. Still, I can change one variable at a time; maybe I should try scales and a timer.

No I haven't bothered, like you I don't make short drinks, the only time I drink them is if they are coming out of a professional machine.
