Chair recommendations?

Malbon

By Malbon, 1728817937

I need a new work/office chair and was wondering if anyone here has one they are pleased with and would recommend?

Been having a bit of back trouble so need something with very good lumbar support/adjustability etc.

Thanks for posting this. I'm in a similar situation to you so I'll be watching this thread closely.

I can't recommend these enough not cheap but I used one for years as does most of my friends often sitting in them for 4 hours plus https://boulies.co.uk

I suffer from a severe lower back pain due to a broken back years ago

I do love my chair but I’m not sure I’d recommend it for back pain as it has limited adjustability, all though it works for my back. Vitra Physixs, Vitra are about the elite of Swiss German design and they produce  the Ray Eames armchair, enough said. Costs a grand but there was loads on eBay for £300. So my advice is more check the used market. Many offices, architects etc get super high end stuff which often ends up on eBay etc if they go under.

Consider the Herman Miller Mirra chair. Mine is 16 years old, and I spend 10+ hours/day in it without any issues; it's by far the most comfortable chair I've ever used. They're expensive new, but can be found used for under $300. It's not as well known as the Aeron, but, having used both, I definitely prefer the Mirra over the Aeron.

I’d suggest a “saddle stool”.

Fixed my back problems. Used to need physio every couple of months .

Just had the urge to buy one of these just to use it for an Nude shoot with some models!
Looks like it would be good for a bad back too!

I'm getting old and for some reason the last year or two I keep pulling muscles in my back and shoulders with the least little thing and it feels like I'm giving myself nerve damage as months later the muscles still feel tender.  I could by lying in bed and I just get up and pull a muscle or a simple sneeze could put my back out! and MRI's an everything and Doctors found nothing wrong.
I spent years in front of the computer and posture or chairs never bothered my but now that I'm 48 I'm starting to see aches/pains and healing slow do big time.

Depends what the Budget is really and would help a lot if you can sit in one before you buy, we are all different, what works for one person will not necessarily work for another.

Hermann Miller Aero chairs have a very good reputation but even refurbished are around £500. I have a Hag chair, but they are too firm for many.

As previously mentioned, eBay can have some useful buys but dont get caught about returns.

After 30+ years working in commercial interior design I'm a bit a chair nerd and would recommend: Herman Miller - 'Aeron, 'Embody' or 'Mirra 2', Humanscale 'Freedom' or Knoll 'Life'. All good chairs.

If you want something with great aesthetics (with a price tag to match), look at either the: Interstuhl 'Silver' or Herman Miller 'Eames Softpad' or 'Aluminium Group' (made by Vitra in Europe).

At work I sat on the 'Embody' and 'Mirra 2'.

At home I sit on the 'Mirra 2', 'Eames Softpad' (mid back) and 'Silver' chairs depending on the task and the desk I happen to have chosen.

Another Hermann Miller Aero advocate from someone with back problems who spends too many hours at the computer desk

All great advice above 👍

As an alternative, for the more DIY adventurous (or you could come across one already mounted) ... good / great quality car seats (typically Recaro and from 80s, 90s) can make for superb office chairs.

I have two 🤣

My 1st Recaro seat was purchasd really cheaply and was already custom mounted (welded n bolted) and this attached to a fairly standard to heavier duty) strut n wheels set up, i.e:

I would HIGHLY recommend (trying) to find something heavier duty than what I have pictured above.

One of the best things I have purchased off amazon recently was new wheels (that look nothing like the weak n bendy typical 'all plastic' rubbish above).

Strong, super smooth and strong bearings. The rubberised surrounds won't easily scratch or wear hard flooring either 👍

This Recaro seat was familiar to Monza GSE owners:

😍😍

My other Recaro seat was a posher electric one that also has a pump up adjustable lumbar support. MUCH heavier and hence I figured out that one way to mount it was to 'reverse' the normal position of a Ikea Poang footstool that I wasn't often using with the matching chair. I took offthe leather cover:

Being a long legged 6'6" thing, the 'reverse mounting' has given me just enough elevation under my thighs, so that the Recaro seat base is at the right angle for me (so my thighs are not 'floating').

This is the other Recaro:

Seems very extravagant to be NOT used in a car to be honest ... but one day I might own something suitably 'pre airbags era' to put it in again 😍😇

When I look at how absolutely CRAP a lot of the gaming chairs are, and how much money even the most pony n flimsy are - I feel a nerdy smugness when sitting in my above Reacro (static mounted), when having a Fanatec racing sim session 😍😇

That sounds awful. It could be something simple like dehydration, muscle overuse or poor physical condition if the doctors have ruled out a medical condition. I'm sure you could also test for vitamin deficiency at your GP, if not a Chemist?

Herman Millers for sure. Keep an eye on ebay, a lot of closed offices stock appears on there and you can pick them up for a fraction of the price. Put the research into he model you want first though!
