In all honesty, the books were a little boring. Great stories but oh my what a lot of exposition. Peter jackson made LOTR watchable with great screenplay and effects. The Hobbit film was good in its own rights if you had called it. Something nothing to do with Tolkein. The first season was not bad but a little too slow. This season so far for me has had the odd flash but that is as rare as Mithril.
I think you miss the point. The books were meant to be folklore/faux-history/immersive….hence the exposition. They weren’t meant to be rip-roaring adventure à La Wilbur Smith or dialogue-driven thrillers à La Elmore Leonard or rattling good yarns à La Jeffrey Archer. The idea was for the reader (like Tolkien himself did) to get lost in that world/those worlds. However you make a good point: had RoP been called something with no reference to Tolkien I might have been more smitten…..but I doubt it.
These works are inspired by , not direct comparisons to the original authors' creations. If Tolkien hadn't passed 50 years earlier, he might have expanded on his universe himself, much like how Michael Crichton could have continued developing the Jurassic Park universe or Westworld (personally i thought Westworld remake was brilliant). The merit of these adaptations lies in how they interpret and evolve the original story. It's similar to comparing the 1996 Romeo + Juliet to Shakespeare's original, or 10 Things I Hate About You to The Taming of the Shrew, or Beastly to Beauty and the Beast. They are inspired by classic stories but aren't meant to be judged by the exact standards of the original works. if people could write exactly the same as Tolken would then who would remember the man himself and who would appreciate his unique vision ?I was specifically commenting on the Tolkien books in this post….which you seem to have missed. For my response to your ‘adaptations’ comments may I refer you to previous comments by Owen Lloyd and @Huw both of which. I fully endorse. Why is it that just Welsh get it?
Im sorry i thought the post was about rings of power not the tolken movies, my mistake clearly, i give way to the Welsh :-)

ANDY00 - Andy Sir, I have see all 3.
100 - them all being teenagers was stretching it a bit, more like early 20 to 25.
Westwood was good, I enjoyed that.
The last of Us was good, but did they ever explain why 1 person in every 10 disappeared?
i think maybe you mistook last of us with something else, the last of us is the one about the man and young girl in post apocalyptic world ravaged by humans infected by fungus The Last of Us (TV Series 2023– ) - IMDb , well worth a watch although will be a wait for second season apparently which is a shame

Yes, sorry Andy, I fear they you are correct, Sir!
Yes, I remember the man and the girl, making a cross country journey, it does ring a bell, I have seen it.
But I can't remember the one that I was thinking about. It sarts off which a supermarket shopping trolley, free-wheeling across the carpark on it's own, as the shopper had already been taken/gone/dissapeared. Something like 1 in every 10 people went. No, no, don't tell me, it will come to me.

Yes, of course, 'The Leftovers', and a good name for the series. Thank you Andy.
And 'SEE' was good. Jason Momoa in the future where everyone is blind and no modern tech. The Witchfiner General guy was a ruthless charateur, hunting down the few sighted people.

As a Tolkien fan, I really wanted to like it. But for all the money and effects on screen, the writing and characterisations just aren't all that good. I'm hoping it'll improve by the end, because we know how it ends, and they've got some actual writing to use, rather than just winging it. But it's so clunky and cheesy at times, it's painful. I think we're reaching the end of the golden age of TV, and now everything is designed to last 5 to 7 seasons over 7-10 years, when there's never enough storyline to keep people interested for that long.

You'd think, if ever there was source material to last 7-10 years, Tolkien would be it!
Given the wealth of material, the choice of the Rings of Power was a bit strange, and then to mangle the narrative so deeply seems pointless.
