What should I do with a worthless DSLR?

I'm in the processing of upgrading to a couple of mirrorless cameras and associated lenses, so flogged both of my Nikon DSLRs and F-mount lenses to MPB. Gave them what I felt was an honest appraisal of conditions, and they've come back today with an offer £1,000 less quoted! Part of this quote reduction is a 'worthless' D780, my workhorse since 2020, not worth the £435 they originally quoted. It still takes quality photos (I was using it for commercial jobs last week!) but probably not worth keeping on the shelf, especially now I've sold the associated glass. Any suggestions on finding it a good home?

Well, my trusty D750 is on it's last legs and I can't afford to replace it at the moment. What would you take for it?

1) Put it up for sale here in the ‘Wanted/For Sale’ group.

  and/or

2) Put it on a 10 day auction on eBay (no selling fees now anymore).

Apart from having your answer in the first comment...

Give it to someone. Find them the cheapest lens to use on it.

Give it to a geeky child who doesn't have any experience with a typical camera -- I have given one to a nephew, passed another on to another nephew. One of those nephews is now a quite talented photographer.

Give it to an artistic friend who has no money.

Teach them how to use it too.

Or donate it to a charity shop. The British Heart Foundation sell things like that on eBay for actual money to people who have some reason to buy it.

Or... find a way to use it to destruction yourself. It's paid for. Put it on a pole connected to a tatty old mobile phone and make it do timelapses. Use it only in messy shoots.

^ Yep.

Donate to someone in need, if it's been used commercially it probably owes you 0.

Either the charitable donation route, or get it converted to Infrared and try something different, an ‘F’ mount adapter and “vintage glass?”

Another option worth considering, if you think it's in mechanically good order:

Trade it for an all-day shoot with a model who wants to try photography or has some older Nikon. The D780 is a highly competent, low-compromise all-rounder, after all. At most you'd have to locate a cheap 50mm lens for them to buy.

(At least one prominent model in your portfolio shoots Nikon! Suggestion sent via DM)

Whenever I have attended the Photography Show, I have always visited and made a modest purchase from The Disabled Photographer's Society. I am sure they would be grateful for the donation.

Why is it worthless? Is it due for a shutter replacement? Are all the doors and covers missing and the screens cracked? Worthless is an incredibly low valuation but may just mean that there's not enough profit to make it worth it for mpb to clean it and add it to their stock.

Huw said, 1731092236

Worthless just means they can't resell it for a profit.

What would you take for it? Would it work with my 1973 manual focus lenses?

Roger M said, 1731094211

Huw Yes it would work with all your Nikkor vintage lenses provided they were AI or AI adapted. Pre AI-no. You would get metering "double arrow and dot.":)

I fail to see why a D780 could be classed as worthless. True, you will never get from a dealer what you think it's worth, but if it still takes good pictures, either sell or give it to someone.

If you have the time could you tell me why they gave you such a bad reason for the low offer is it high mileage or dinged about ?

All Pre-AI unfortunately - mostly single coated for the flare and atmosphere.
Back to using them on my Canon mirrorless I suppose.

I caught myself looking at the original Nikon F bodies on Ebay last week.
Then I decided to be sensible.

get it converted to infrared and stick a cheap kit lens on it and keep it
