Shooting Video

Hi folks,

I'm just wondering if anyone here shoots video. I'm looking to start making little videos and was wondering if anyone had any good resources to learn from.

Books

YouTube Channels/playlists

Courses

Thanks,

Ant

A growing number of us shoot video, yes.

I find Josh Sattin is one of the YouTubers that has a great video centric channel, though it has a bias towards Canon gear so might not offer up too much for a Nikon user for example.

As each camera has wildly different specifications, menus and features for video, it’s probably not a bad starting point just to search for your camera model with the word video added and see what tutorials pop up on YouTube.

Searching for tutorials on ND Filters and the 180 degree shutter rule will also help you get the basics quickly (along with lighting setup if you’re shooting indoors).

Lots of resources on video, but the one advice I would offer is, shooting video is seldom about problems with the video, and 90% about getting good coherent audio.

YouTube will be your friend.......but don't open your wallet too soon?

That's a very broad base and question. what type of video, purpose, subject matter etc because what you might need will vary substantially. This has changed dramatically in past year or two. some manage with a top of the range smart phone, others using cameras/mics such as DJI pocket 3/mic2. Then the dslr or mirrorless brigade. Video capture is only the start, then it's transforming that into the end product. Use what you have already to get started, don't invest until you've decided the direction you are going to take, prices and availability change for the better with time, it's getting much less expensive in general for beginners.

People to watch on youtube...Jeven Dovey, Vince Opra, The Drone Creative (Pocket 3 and drone), they will lead you on to others to get motivated and started.

Youtube.

Start with your phone.

Add a phone gymbal.

Move on from there to a mirrorless camera.

I’m running a video workshop at Fareham studio at the start of November but that’s probably a little far from you but I’ll be looking to do more over the country!

I do quite a lot of them myself (Videos) and have found one of the most obvious things is coverage. It can be tough when you're in the middle of a shoot flow. But I make a point to stop. Get video. Get more video. Get angles. It makes all the difference to keep edits a bit dynamic.

YouTube is your friend

As already stated if you are producing only for yourself your phone and a phone gimbal will serve you well. I would add a DJI pocket 3 and DJI mini 3.

We entered full time into video last year and it’s been a never ending money pit so research your end goal before opening your wallet…… video production gear costs are frightening

As already said. Audio is king, followed by stabilisation. Unless you're just going to do BTS type stuff and throw music over the top. You can pick up a DJI Osmo I for £150 on MBP which may actually do all you need and they are very light.

WJM Videography it will just be a couple of travel vlogs and bts from shoots. I have a Sony mirrorless with primes and zooms so I think I've got all the kit apart from a lav mic

Firstadekit I'll check that out
