Adobe subscriptions

Trying to help a friend reduce his outgoings.

He has a photoshop monthly subscription but he hasn't used photoshop in a few years.  I tried to get him to cancel it but he says you have to pay a full 12 months subscription when you cancel

Is this right?  It seems a bit excessive but nothing would surprise me with Adobe

I've never heard of that, and it sounds unlikely but if he's interested he could find out pretty easily by asking Adobe support.  Either via his account or I've found they respond reasonably quickly to messages.

I think if you go through the process to cancel then when they ask why, there is an option for price/cost too much. I think they then give you an option to get a discount for at least a few months while they can wait for offers like during the current Amazon deal or things like the Black Friday or Christmas time when they do offers.

No. He may be confused because while it is billed monthly, it can be an annual subscription. It sounds likely he is on the annual-but-billed-monthly plan.

We have discussed this before several times but as I understand it, cancellation can often only be done without penalty in the first month of a new annual term (or the last month of an existing term):

The early cancellation penalty for an annual plan billed monthly appears to be 50% of the remaining commitment for the current term.

Either way as ADWsPhotos is saying, the quickest way to find out is to talk to Adobe customer support, though presumably you can log in to his account with him and find out the details of the plan he is on and when his current term ends.

As far as I know, the only plan available is the annual plan, either paid up front in full or monthly. Either way, you end up paying Adobe the same. Cancelling just means paying up the remainder of the year. This might change in future though as the FTC in the States is investigating Adobe for various alleged infractions like hidden fees etc.

Best thing to do is set a reminder for the renewal date and give plenty of time to go on the site and cancel.

There is, in fact, a "monthly, no annual commitment" plan, even for Photoshop alone. But you would have to need it for only a month, because it costs £32.98/month.

I think it may vary according to the laws in your region/country. In the UK, if you're paying monthly you can just stop payments and your plan will cease from date when the next payment would be due - i think they actually give you a few days grace.

Adobe seem to say the early cancellation fee for 50% of the remainining term "may" apply, which suggests they are aware that there are limitations on it (distance selling rules, trade descriptions act, other consumer protections).

It's definitely in the Ts+Cs for UK customers:

It's just a question of what circumstances make that non-binding.

(I personally don't use Creative Cloud but I have been through this with a couple of people IRL who don't know what they are potentially getting into contractually)

All I know is that a fellow photographer decided to take a break and simply cancelled their direct debit. AFAIK they were not asked for any additional payment, they had a couple of emails reminding them that their account would be suspended unless payment was made and eventually thats exactly what happend.
