To shoot or not to shoot?

An accident in 2021 has resulted in some challenges around my photography, carrying or using a bulky/heavy camera and equipment is no longer an option for me, as my mobility deteriorates, some days are better than others, but in general I need to use a walking aid/stick when out & about.

In short, I have decided to ditch my camera and use an iPhone for my photography…..

As a model, how would you feel if I turned up at a shoot with only an iPhone?

TIA

Grant

I think without your explanation, simply turning up with an I-phone doesn't seem professional and gives 'man with cam' vibes.

I think if you were to proceed along these lines then you should fully explain to the model your situation, prior to the shoot.

I know phone technology is developing massively. I have a s24 which takes amazing images, but I'd still shoot on my canon anyway.

I agree with Mel4nie , without prior warning and knowing the full story - I would be concerned. However, if you explained to me your reasoning in pre-comms, I would be understanding and relaxed about the situation.

Is using a tripod an option at all?

Not a model, but....

- you make it very clear that you only shoot with an iPhone on your portfolio.

- maybe add a little more explanation, e.g.:  "An accident in 2021 has resulted in some challenges around my photography, with limited mobility, therefore I now only shoot using an iPhone"

Not too many models will see this.

Tagging Pippa. who is always helpful.

Using gimbal (and other technology) ... maybe this could be a USP that centred on all the things it could do / can do better / differently ... vs any negativity around where it loses out ?

Also with so many using them, it's always a conversation maker.

Video shorts?

I would anyway ...

INFINITY Model I’m still looking at what will work and what wouldn’t, using both hands at same time is my biggest challenge, as I often need a stick or be seated to steady myself.

Could you seek assistance from someone you know perhaps Grant? Who could shoot to your brief or direction for the time being. This may mean you have a sort of chaperone during the shoot so speak of it with the model so they understand.

I would understand if it's not what you want though since you are not shooting yourself in this event.

A mate of mine uses small Fuji cameras for his photography as he also uses a stick and has mobility problems, he's able to capture some incredible pics and the cameras are small and easily used one handed too.

I may have suggested these people before?

Huw Thanks Huw, I’ve not completely made the decision to shoot with iPhone, look at other options or give up?

In all honesty, I enjoy preparing for a shoot and engaging with the model on ideas. Also and this is a big part, I’m getting less & less engagement with people and stimulating my brain. I currently can’t work so this one of few ways I can still connect with people on a creative level

Mel4nie thank you, precomms is really important as not everyone reads portfolio notes (y)

Huw greatly appreciated

Make yourself one of these...

The Arca mount means you can mount a camera or your iPhone. Really useful bit of kit actually. Dirt cheap and incredibly versatile too. A quick how-to if anyone is interested...

Works for me... :-)

Lenswonder this is a good option, I’ve done a couple of remote shoots but I like to be the one with finger in trigger so to speak

If I may - and apologies for being one of the many photographers posting when you wanted model input...

Suggestions:

Canon 100D, 200D or 250D (all the same tiny, extremely light body; good control buttons, 250D has a more modern sensor) plus the EF 50/1.8 STM lens.
Dump the rest.
It has been my camera of choice for maybe 8 years for shooting one-handed while riding a horse.
(sadly my horse owning days seem to be over due to age....  )
