On your other point you can say the same about all the other styles here on PP and beyond.

I usually wear a T-shirt and jeans.

I think all photographers should have to do one or two shoots while they are nude.

Learn about things like cold, sunburn, midge bites in awkward places…..

Sturgeon’s Law applies, just as with other styles/subjects.

(90% of everything is shit)

I don't shoot as many as I used to. This is because I have been taking portraits to serve my main discipline of painting. Many of my models do not shoot nudes ergo fewer nude shoots.

The reason for preferring to shoot nudes is also tied up with my art training. I see it as an extension of life drawing. As soon as clothes of accessories are added it becomes something else.

For that reason I have resisted the temptation to shoot a nude model in high heels. Art nude is the purest form for me.

More so Dunning-Kruger, I think?

As a model, I stopped shooting nudes a few years ago for a variety of reasons, one of those reasons was because you are limited to where you can post nude images. Facebook and instagram got stricter, and even with ‘blurring out’ nipples or drawing a line over it, peoples pages were still getting flagged and taken down. So in all honesty, I started to think - ‘well what’s the point if I can’t really post it anywhere?’. I’d go to amazing places around the world, do some incredible shoots, but have nothing to really show for it on social media because 90% of the images were nude, and I guess that kind of made me feel a little disinterested in the whole nude thing.

I am obviously aware that my generation probably has a greater interest in instagram than perhaps some photographers of an older generation, who might be quite ok just showcasing their work on purpleport, which is completely ok. But after social media got stricter, it really did make me rethink what I want to be doing as a model.

From a model perspective that's a really good point, why do shoots you cannot display publicly for marketing purposes to raise your profile as a model and find better photographers and for professionals better or more paid work.

There are models who can do nude in front of a total stranger and still pull off a magnificent pose, facial expression and they are so skilled and professional, though there are models who have facial expressions that can range from embarrassment, suspicion through to contempt and even dislike, though that could be the assignment of course.

I would keep going with the non-nudes for now as you seem comfortable with the choice, but see how things go and leave yourself room to be creative should you think of something really worthwhile doing.

I suspect the advent of Only Fans has helped inform models’ decisions. I’ve had several say words to the effect of ‘if someone wants to see me nude then they pay for it’ Note the ‘someone’ in this case being the viewer of the images, not necessarily the photographer. In which I can see some logic.

Shoot what you want! It’s that simple. 🤪 Shoot what interests you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What I find cringier than people who shoot nudes badly because *BOOBIES* (hey, each to their own and as long as they are kind and respectful that has been legitimate bread and butter for a lot of models here) …Sorry tangent! 😅 But what I find cringier than that is people who protest too much and make a big deal about how holy they are making an active decision NOT to shoot nudes. Like bruh - nobody really cares. 🙊 Most professional models who cover a wide variety of levels (up to nude) have a humongous wardrobe, and are as delighted to do a kick-ass fashion look *WHERE THE MOMENT SUITS* as they are doing a kick-ass nude look *WHERE IT SUITS!* It’s really not a big deal, but I’ve had people protest tooooo much to the point of: rather than just saying they prefer fashion and leaving it at that/letting the creativity flow with my ridiculously massive wardrobe (that I always bring) they will make comments like: “oh it must be a change for you wearing clothes? I’m not like other photographers I want to give you the chance to wear something. 😇 It’s my personal moral compass, so I’m so pleased you went out of your way to accommodate Keira… It must be weird when a photographer doesn’t want you nude?” And honestly, that can get to the point of sounding more creepy than a GWC who just wants to happily snap away at pretty naked ladies. 😂 The other thing is people trying to shoot what would usually be like an art nude style shot but with clothes just for the sake of it like some kind of *reborn righteous human!* So: a smallish art nude figure in the frame of a big landscape works well. The figure (even when small in the picture) usually stands out with the dramatic environment… It’s not really about *BOBS AND VAGENE* at this point because let’s face it - you have to zoom in dramatically to normally see anything. 🙃 It just works… But when people who have in the past shot nudes like that then try to dress them up in pretty basic clothes, purely for moral compass purposes and nothing to do with whether it looks good or not. I feel like it can end up looking like the photographer tried to take a picture of a beautiful landscape and some annoying tourist in an everyday outfit photobombed. 🤣 By all means: a humongous parachute dress or something could work in that environment, or something equally as dramatic as the landscape… But just asking someone to put on shorts and a top and then trying to shoot it the same way that you would art nude in the landscape just makes the shoot feel like it’s making a moral point rather than getting good images. Fair do’s: shoot the shorts and top - but fill the frame with the model, get some cool light going so you see the interesting fabric of the shorts and you can actually see the models expressions working in with how they use the garments to pose too. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I get sooo into fashion modelling when an idea’s thrown my way; often incited to put a tonne of effort into glowing-up my look to radiate sass AF for the theme… But if you’re not actually going to see any of that styling effort then what’s the point? 😅 Good quality proper fashion shooting is hard - lots to account for and usually requires far more complex lighting to make the whole look pop. I adore it when it does all come together, but it’s a huge difference to just popping some clothes on just for the sake of it/because you’re trying to actively avoid nudity rather than shooting a shit-hot clothed look. That’s usually either then more a casual look, or a bit more of glamour elements depending on the models interpretation? 🤔 It’s good to communicate what you’re after as such because a pretty portrait is different to a model going hell-for-leather and pulling/stretching their garments (which can look more suggestive than nude!) But of course everyone is free to shoot what they like - just communicate well with the people you’re working with and a photographer should have no issues achieving what they personally seek as an individual in an image. I’m happy to accommodate whatever a photographer would like to shoot, as long as within my levels and shot reasonably tastefully/respectfully. If they welcome my input and experience to make that particular look/style look even better then great! Some photographers want that input, some would rather do their own thing and it’s fine. 😊

A long rambling way to say live and let live basically. 💁🏻‍♀️ But try not to make it weird - whether you keep the model in clothes or not. 😝

Paragraphs are your friend ;)

JMPIX Oh paragraphs are great! 😎 But I must admit, for a largely rant-based forum where people mostly just spew as if they’re talking… I honestly couldn’t be bothered. 😂 If I’m writing an article for a magazine or something it’s different. But I wasn’t - I was stuck waiting for my cat to move off me; of which, when that very moment did occur then I’d be putting the kettle on with immediate effect. 🍵🤓👍 No time for paragraphs! 🏃🏻‍♀️ If folks are interested, they’ll read it. 😉
