I print my digital shots in A4 or A3 sized paper and keep the prints in folders with plastic pockets so I crop my images to 1:1.41 during my edits. When I'm looking through my raw files now I dont conider any other crop aspect ratios. I never got into printing a lot smaller than the papersize leaving a huge border around the edges.
Not really a fan of square crop but would love a Hassleblad to change my mind, with film I'm shooting 35mm and with 120 film I'm using a Mayima 645, but have left the darkroom days behind me so only dabble in it for the fun of developing the rolls but never print it any longer.

I print most of my edits and always A4 borderless unless 1:1, this works well for images shot 4:3 rarely is there an issue as a bit of space is left in most captures to allow for keystone correction/alignment at capture. I print 1:1 to A4 with small side border but don't trim. If other sizes are requested I print to A4 and let them be trimmed to suit. Some print mags want images a certain dimension, I do these on an individual basis.

"...the other is to compose to fit the camera..."
which, of course, is very true. Unlike you though, I am largely slave to the initial choices of the photographer. Sometimes those choices are 'on the money'; more often, they need some fine tuning :-)

If someone waves money at me they can have any shape they want. ;)

Taken (usually) through a round lens.
Round lens for round cropped photos! dunno if anyone crops round anymore (only see it now with people that sell Iris/eye photographs)
