East Lancs Railway 1940's Weekend

Is anyone else planning to go to the East Lancs Railways 1940's weekend at the beginning of June, It's been cancelled for the past two years because of the pandemic. There are usually good photo opportunities to be had, Although I'm not sure what impact Covid 19 will have on the event. I have noticed a £10 jump in ticket prices from pre pandemic times, But should still be worth while if as good as I remember. As with most events a lot depends on the weather.

Seems odd that they are celebrating the Jubilee with a 1940s themed event - the Queen came to the throne in 1952!

It used to be an annual event at the end of May before the pandemic.

it has nothing to do with the queen Jubilee, its an annual event based on 40s theme........!!

The first two sentences say it is to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a 1940s themed weekend, the weekend of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Nothing to do with, erm, the Queen's Platinum Jubilee then.

Seems a bit of inconsistency between the heritage lines. Local to me, Mid Hants Railway, have cancelled their 1940s event, due to the Ukraine situation and the insensitivity of members of public dressing up in military uniform etc.

Not sure who has the correct approach, arguments on both sides as always.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway have cancelled their annual event for that very reason, but it was specifically entitled Railways in Wartime.

This is a very sensitive subject. Like many other military shows, we're holding The Overlord Show as normal, it's usually the last May Bank Holiday weekend, which is of course now the Jubilee weekend.  Unsurprisingly, we had a long discussion about Russian re-enactors too, and came up with the following explanation back in March:

We would like to give an update regarding the status of the show. As you will undoubtedly be aware of ongoing events, like you the show team is troubled over reports of the current situation in Ukraine. We have seen that some shows have decided not to host their events however, We would like to confirm that it is the organiser's intention to continue with the Overlord Show this year, with this year's charity being in support of the Ukrainians. The exact charity will be confirmed closer to the show so that it can be most effectively allocated where it is most needed. We would like to remind you that the Overlord show aims to provide an experience for the general public to learn about various aspects of recent military history through a combination of vehicular and re-enactment dioramas and proactive living historians. None of the groups that attend the show does so for political or ideological purposes. Those who have attended before know that we do host several re-enactment groups which present the units of the Soviet Union, in particular Russian units. We have no intention to ban these groups from the show, just like we have no plans to ban groups that represent the Axis powers. None of these groups represents the belligerent forces as they are today and banning such groups would serve no effective purpose.

The ELR 1940's weekend is more than a military event, Yes there are military re-enactors, But there are also 1940's civilians, Steam trains, Swing bands on the platforms, Stalls, And events taking place in several towns along the length of the track. Many of the shops in Ramsbottom participate and are decorated to look like 1940's tea shops etc.

I was on the ELR for a shoot on Thursday. It is looking good. Bunting is up and platforms are looking really tidy.
