Orson Carter well then, next time we shoot, I think an even playing field of a nice chilly location is on the cards 🤣

Huw I get my in house photographer (husband) to wear my coat for this very reason!

I'd love to, but I'm washing my hair on that day.

[* No. Hang on. Haven't got much hair to wash. Must think of another excuse... *]

I despise the cold.. I just don’t do well in cooler temperatures at all, so I will not be able to produce my best work. And by cold I mean anything less than 25 degrees C.

Ha, joking - or am I!

I shoot to the conditions and have a plan b indoors so never cancel or reschedule.

Photographers who do not have a plan b ie an alternative to location and / or are more likely than you to cry off due to weather probably need to be placed in a higher risk category than those that are switched on before deciding to accept the booking.

I will cope with anything the weather can do and my camera is out in rain and snow on mountain tops so I am less timid than others plus I made sure I invested in one that has weather sealing

It might not apply to you OP but if you do any self shooting, or anyone else for that matter, always be mindful of just how insidiously cold and hypothermia can creep up on you and always make sure someone is with you until you are out of the wilds and back into urban areas.

A couple of years ago I was self shooting, only in late September but with a very sheer dress on and the sun was setting and I felt (or thought I felt absolutely fine) until i decided to pack up and realised that I was actually struggling to use my hands, they had gone completely numb and I had no control over them.

I managed to pack up with difficulty and get back to my car but I had started shaking by then.

When I got back to my car I realised with horror that I didn't actually have enough ability in my hands to get the key in the lock (yes it's that sort of car 😄). I started to panic slightly because I was so cold at that point but luckily the car was parked on the edge of a village so I knew I could get help and quickly if I needed it.

There were a couple nearby who were watching me too and it was so embarrassing because whatever I told my hands to do, they just wouldn't do it. Eventually I managed to get the lock open by holding my wrist with the other hand and just kinda forcing it with everything I had but it was difficult.

And actually quite frightening realising that I couldn't use my hands.

In the car it took about half an hour for enough feeling to come back to be able to drive.

At no point was I in any serious danger, I had my phone and would have been able to dial 999 and also I was near help if needed but it did seriously make me think if I'd been parked out in the middle of nowhere.

And it was scary how quickly I suddenly went from ok to really not ok and I did not for one second realise my body was getting that cold due to being in the sun set sun.

Obviously if you're out shooting with photographers then those sort of risks are minimised as they should be looking after your welfare but if for example you part ways quickly after the shoot and before you're fully warmed up you could still get issues so I think it's so important in the winter to be extra careful of how quickly you can go south if you are nude or wearing very little clothing.

Margo Jost , that sounds like you had a lucky escape from a surprisingly scary situation.

The maxim of “no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing” applies even when you’re not expecting it.

The Ghost yes that was the crazy thing to me, how such a benign situation - sitting in evening autumn sun could turn to something bad so quickly and unexpectedly.

Honestly, I was so cold and shivering so badly by the time I got back to the car that if I had been out in the middle of nowhere with no one around (which I do quite alot) I think I probably would have had to call 999. I was on the verge of panicking a little even with people in the vicinity.

Good thing is that it has made me realise just how dependant I am on my hands!

I think the problem is that the temperature can drop so sharply during golden hour (and that's at any time of year even summer) that it can really catch you out. That's where shooting with a photographer is very handy because they should be aware of the dropping temperatures.

Opposite problem for me. Models already cancelling outdoor shoots because it’s too cold, it’s been making filling spots for my outdoor winter projects a pain.

As people have said it’s pretty mild currently so cancelling them days or weeks before has surprised me. Like any outdoor gig I’m fine with a last minute cancellation due to weather. It’s the game you play in the UK and that’s 12 months of the year, not just winter.

No one wants a massive wall of text in an initial enquiry, but I do warn it could be a cold shoot and we’d take precautions. The final shoot plan email where ‘everything is in one place’ will then detail advice and guidance for staying warm when not shooting. But how many fully read that I don’t know, I try to treat everyone the same regardless of how much experience they have and always welcome feedback myself. Every day is a school day.

Firstadekit yep not something I get at all! But plus side is, my diary for next year is already getting filled up.

For me, when you start getting towards the colder months, you go into a shoot knowing it may be colder and you make provisions as you say, with a plan to stay warm between shots and to warm up afterwards- for me, that usually involves going for a cuppa afterwards!

Ms Storm - I tested your suggestion this morning. Avon & Somerset Constabulary were quick on the scene, and I'm now out on bail.
