Return of a deposit

In my line of work, if your job is less than £100k, you pay upfront. In full. But you do get 30 days to pay the invoice.
If you haven't paid the invoice in 45 days ... unless otherwise arranged, we cancel the project, issue a credit note to cancel the invoice, and forget about it
We also issue free quotes... right up to the third one ... then an admin charge gets added to the quote.
But then ... we're strictly business to business and don't deal with domestic customers at all.
We can do this because we're a company, with a fixed address that can be served, and members of various organisations.
On a personal level, I wouldn't dream of issuing payment in advance to anyone without an invoice and registered address.
Doesn't stop rogue traders [God bless phoenix companies... not], but conmen exists in all walks of life ... all you can do is try not to be the mark.

Had two models cancel this year, if they want a deposit I suggest they get another tog.

I don’t think the issue here is models cancelling. That happens from time to time, as people can’t help getting ill.
The issue is both models cancelling and then stealing the deposit. That probably happens, as there are dishonest people in all walks of life, but I suspect it’s actually very rare. An established model with hundreds of references is unlikely to throw their career away just to steal a £50 deposit.

I all so have been asked for a deposit,
I don't understand why when it is work your going too ie a photo shoot that you feel that you should have a deposit ie the model
When I go to work I don't ask for a deposit, sometimes as amiture photographer on a low income I feel that I'm being used as a cash machine, ie easy money
This has been discussed here many, many times before and there are reasons on both sides. The bottom line is, if you don't want to pay a deposit, find another model?

Hiya
I ask for deposits for most shoots.
I will always return the deposit if there is a cancellation by myself.
Money that is taken for shoots is put into hold until the day of the shoot.
It would not be worth me ripping off a photographer, I'd rather not have that reputation for the sake of a deposit .
Kind regards
Ashley

Offthereheads photography When you go to a 9-5 job there is no risk of not being paid that day. As a model, we are freelance on here and our income is solely dependent on trusting a complete stranger to turn up. I don't personally take deposits apart from tours, but I do understand why people do. It takes away the risk.

If, as a photographer, you regularly pay deposits to internet models there is NO DOUBT that you will be ripped off sooner or later. Probably sooner.

I had a deposit refused refund when we had to postpone due to lockdown. The model (one who is highly rated by most)took great offence when I asked for it back and I never did get it

Yes. Though, as with most things, you just have to be sensible.
I paid a deposit on my last shoot which was with Rose Magdalene Child. 1000 references and 500 FPI’s meant it was an extremely safe bet.
Someone relatively new to the site, with no or few references and/or negative references is a much greater risk and I would say no to anyone who asks for a deposit.

This has been discussed many times, not much is going to change. The only way funds may be recovered is if you have an agreement and a way of pursuing the person you paid, which also includes time effort and frustration in doing that. This goes for anything.
A wise person once told me to not give money you can't afford to lose, especially to family, think of it as a gift and bite your lip when it's not repaid.

You have 16 references.
One of them is a "No show".
Why are you surprised to be asked for a deposit?

Late cancellations happen too often in this game. Consequently, I don't do deposits. Thing is, I would only cancel in extremis so I don't feel I need to. I'm going to show up. If a model genuinely wants the work, she's going to get a shoot and be paid the agreed rate at the end.
You also need to be sure the model herself is the real deal. They normally don't last long but fake profiles do exist.

I don’t have a problem with a deposit but I have a cancelation reprocussions. If I book a studio and model then, let’s say the studio cancel within 24hrs. Let’s say burst water main or the like. If the model then wants to charge me full amount why do I have to be liable for any failure by others ? If it was a commercial shoot each party would have indemnity insurance but PP shoots are different. How many photographers would be able to put a clause in a contract demanding the studio re-emburses the model ?
