Does PP need a photo shuffle

If you want to garner more likes use the shoutbox?

In my experience the shoutbox is a write-only medium.  That is, people post there but never interact with what other people post.  Most of the so-called "games" are like that, too - the "post your own _____ picture" (fill in the theme).  Or the multitude of bragging "games" such as "post your images with over 1000 loves".

The quality interaction for me comes from the "previous poster" type games, where I get to peruse someone else's portfolio and choose what I think is their best picture on some theme.  And of course someone else then gets to look at mine.

And from the Randoms gadget (and Randoms page), where I see all sorts of pictures I might normally not see.  Especially in SFW mode - I strongly recommend doing that.

And from the Group Image Collection gadget, where I can choose a group with an image gallery and (normally) get to see a curated set of images on some theme - my current favourite is Dance.

I think a random image thing would be really good. The speed of disappearing could also be reduced by limiting the number of uploads you can have in a 24 hour period. Currently set at 15 minutes. Would increasing the lock out time slow down the speed images disappear and encourage people to put up only their best work?

The Random images gadget is accessible on the home page using the Customise (spanner) button.

It's been mentioned in this post several times already.

I don't think this would have the effect you think it would.

Sensual Art fair enough. Appreciate random image available but was thinking more that it was default. Should have been clearer.

I guess we might not know the effect of slowing down uploads until it was tried out. Personally I’m more likely to click through to someone’s portfolio to see more of their work if I see a really cracking image. Seeing multiple uploads of a similar shot make me less likely to do this but I’m sure everyone will have their own take on this.

I don't think I've knowingly looked at the recent images gadget. I tend to see the new images of the people I follow and the people in my area. I sometimes ramble through ports new to me and make many pleasant discoveries of artistic and inspring talent. I say 'ramble' but at the moment, suffering from a touch of sciatica, it is more of a shuffle.

Sam Lamont Beck in PurplePort's early days, there was no throttle at all on adding images and having them appear in Recent Images.  There were many complaints about individuals uploading what felt like an entire shoot's-worth of pictures in one go, flooding out anyone else's chances of getting seen.  PP responded by introducing the 15 minute delay.  Life has been massively more pleasant since that.

Whether changing the delay to some other value would improve things further I obviously couldn't say, but I'd anticipate a backlash if it were made longer.  Knowing the owner, Russ, as I do, I think it's reasonable to anticipate that his response will be along the lines of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", and to ask exactly what time delay you'd propose instead, and why.  I don't believe that we see

multiple uploads of a similar shot

often enough to be able to say that there's a problem at all.  Indeed, I think the only time I ever see more than one picture from any given contributor at the same time on the two rows of Recent Images that I've got is during the UK's night-time hours, and that's only because the majority of users on here are in the UK, hence the majority of uploaders are here in the UK.

Are you seeing problems at other times of day that I've not been aware of?

Sam Lamont said, 1730635431

Sensual Art yes you are right. Tends to be during UK night that you see multiple uploads from the same shoot.

Thanks for giving me a bit more history as being new here I won’t see the full context. Find the same in my day job. I’ve been around long enough there to see old ideas resurfacing as new!

Until this thread I had not seen the option to customise the homepage.  Probably like many I was seeing the default and, yes, frustrated at lack of lack of exposure.  Now I have random images widget selected which is great, along with FPIs and recent activity.

Still it would be good to have some more control on random images - e.g timeframes, as suggested, or people I follow and, ideally themes.  Would be great to have some dynamic selection on that to toggle those selections on/off

You've presumably seen the gadget "Recent images from people I follow" for part of that.  And "Group Image Collection" can give themed collections.  PM me if you want suggestions.

But what sort of dynamic selection on that to toggle those selections on/off do you have in mind that you can't already do with "Hide Gadget"?

Still discovering the customisation and you are right these do provide good selection.  I had it in mind more to focus on a single gadget with filters, e.g. a line of radio buttons across the top enabling: timeframes [24hr, 7d, 30d, all], [from-follow, all], [selected groups, all] and for the shown images to update in response.  Less clicks and jumping around than showing/hiding different gadgets

Still it is quite customisable and impressive.  And honestly more ergonomic than most social sites.  Was not aware of it
