Also, transparent backgrounds allow for the cropping or framing of images that don't conform to square or rectangular shapes.

Instagram has its own failings when it comes to PNG support.

Are we really going to be held back simply because some unrelated site behaves in a particular way?

No, of course not. If there is anything that will mean we don't adopt PNGs as well as JPGs it will be the cost/benefit of it. 

Honest question here, as I genuinely don’t know: what can you do with a PNG that you can’t do with a JPG, other than file size and transparency? And what would you even use transparency for on a photography site? I mean, you can still host images on other sites and link them into a post or your portfolio here if it’s just about transparency or making GIFs, can’t you?

I don't have an Instagram account, and I'd really prefer not to get one. However, I have prepared a couple of simple quadriptyches, from layers within an existing *.xcf - the same source that I used to create the webp animation demo in an earlier post.

They are essentially the same 1920px * 1080px WEBP file, with just one small but significant difference. One has its "#ffffff" colour (and only "ffffff") set to "transparent", the other does not. When displayed on PP using the default site CSS, with its slightly off-white background, there is little visible difference. However, when displayed using a dark theme, say by Darkreader or similar, the difference is quite noticeable.

Transparent border (20231229-gx80-beck-lens-vorsatz-bellows-borders-transp.webp)

Solid white border (20231229-gx80-beck-lens-vorsatz-bellows-borders-solid-fff.webp)

NB. I've used WEBP in this instance rather than PNG to decrease the file size. But the same basic logic would apply to PNG files too. The files are actually located on one of my servers, rather than hosted here on PP. HTH. :-)

Given that every browser supports webp, it would be better to spend the effort on implementing webp than png:

Instagram is quite an important "unrelated site"....

Seems a lot of work to fix something that isn't broken   :)

So you're saying that you wouldn't want to use this new feature yourself.

Request another feature instead, then, that you'd rather PP spend its development effort on.

I did, and PP provided it  :)

Change to 1080px wide for uploads so I could use the same jpg for PP and IG    ;)

It's more that I'm lazy, and I don't really understand the advantages either....
