Given that every browser supports webp, it would be better to spend the effort on implementing webp than png:
Which browsers don't support PNG?
I did not say anything about PNG support, they are both as supported where it counts (any browser in last 2 years). Google state the advantages webp have over png here:
https://developers.google.com/speed/webp
1/4 smaller images when losslessly compressed. 1/3rd better compression vs jpeg, and also supports alpha and animation.

Since photographers and models already have a working format for uploads, wouldn’t it be a fairer option to invest time into video formats instead, for the video creators on the site? Rather than adding more upload options for a limited few who would use them, there’s a large percentage of people who shoot video and currently don’t have any options available. Just a suggestion, but it seems like a lot of work for only a handful of interested people based on the responses in this thread. But how many would like the ability to add video? I imagine quite a lot…

ANDY00 Please don't hijack this thread to ask for something else. Video has been requested before, and can be requested again, but in this thread please stick to the topic, namely a request that PP support PNGs properly, so we can use our creativity and have non-rectangular frames if the picture warrants it.

PNG is very widely supported. I think -sp●●n- means that WEBP is also so widely supported these days that it has rather superseded PNG. In a nutshell, WEBP does everything that PNG does, and does a lot more as well...
- Choice between lossy and lossless compression.
- Better compression.
- Better lossless compression.
- Customisable compression, based around the type of graphics object being compressed.
- Much better support for animation.
- This site partially supports WEBP already. PP sometimes creates WEBP's from uploads, it just doesn't let us upload them as WEBP's! ;-)
Personally I think it would be good if both PNG and WEBP were supported here. IMHO, both still have a place. But if I were forced to make a choice, then it would have to be WEBP. This guy has performed and documented some quite useful comparative tests between the two formats that you might find interesting...

My apologies, I honestly meant no harm or intention to derail the conversation—just questioning the merit of the request within the topic, that’s all. I don’t shoot video myself, just pointing out that if only two or three people want a change made for one format and many more are requesting another, well, it seems logical to prioritize the larger demand, that’s all, i wont but in again

I don't really understand the advantages
In my specific case, transparency allowing for non-rectangular frames was the example which pushed me to raising the question, but triptychs would also benefit in a very similar way. I'm sure on a creative site like this, there would be plenty of other people with their own uses for it.

Do you have the facility to look at this site with a dark theme, as opposed to the default light theme? Such as the dark themes provided by Darkreader and similar? If you do, then please look at my earlier post, with a dark theme loaded, and you should be able to visualise the rationale much better. :-)
