ID Checks - Do We Need Them?

Now I'm sure I'm going to get told I need to be better at not getting myself mugged, however I've noticed a lot of "models" come on only to get removed PDQ.

I'd opened a conversation up with a new model about shooting earlier this week.  Conversations were in-depth enough that I suggested firing a mood board over on Instagram due to the limitations of our messaging system.

So she said "loads of people are asking that so I'll get one set up."

So she starts an Instagram page, follows me, and I fire some sample images over, she likes them, we agree to get a date in the diary.

There's one red flag I should have spotted; because she was claiming to be 18 as is my personal rule I asked to see some I.D.  She said she'd bring it to the shoot but I said I'd prefer her just to take a pic and whack it over on Insta as I knew she might "forget" to bring it.  I've already come across one model who lied about her age on PP (she was, thankfully, honest about it and I was able to stand the shoot down but she was, genuinely, a professional model, dancer & influencer) so it makes me uber-cautious.

Her response was that she didn't want to send me ID over Instagram DMs.

I've logged on to PP this afternoon, and with all the predictability of Greece voting for Cyprus at Eurovision, she's been removed.

Now, it's been suggested in the past that PurplePort set up honey trap profiles.  If they do that, fair play to them.

But it's happened a couple of times recently.  Whilst I appreciate putting extra barriers up to new models is probably counter-productive whilst the scene is on a slowdown, I do wonder if I.D. checks would be beneficial?

It's mandatory on model-kartei.de

It's optional on modelfol.io but there's also the concept there of being identified by having worked with others.

There are data protection issues, and I know I would be extremely hesitant to send a copy of my ID without strict assurance and safeguards.

It's a nice idea, but not without significant issues and costs, and not necessarily with the benefits you might imagine or hope for.

Mostly I rely on references and if any doubt don't bother if I think lying about age

There are third party apps and websites you can use to verify ID, surely that would be a sensible way round the data protection issues that PP might face if it did it internally?

Sorry but we are advised to keep communications to PP. Whether she was under 18 or not you are pushing boundaries wanting ID sent when simply saying that if an ID is not brought to the shoots safe levels only would be shot. I would not be happy sending an ID to a complete stranger.

It looks like you did good due diligence, which is our advice: https://purpleport.com/blog/2023/05/04/post-how-to-find-the-best-creatives-due-diligence-tips-for-photoshoots/170

I'd be surprised if the sites mentioned check the ID against any government databases, since the last time I looked it was around £10-30 for each check.

Without the check against government databases (plural, since PP is not just a UK service) the check is next to worthless, has it's own security issues, and really is just theatre that makes people feel like something is being done.

If you are talking about the profile of a young female model who posted a picture of herself in a school uniform, which no longer seems to be here then it was almost certainly fake and I would guess was probably a honey trap set up by someone here (not admin) to see who took an interest.

We are, but the way that the system is, in my opinion, not fit for purpose has been discussed to death and until image exchange is available, it's never going to be fit for purpose; in my opinion. Other opinions are, as you know, available. Some are shared with me, others are not.

With regards to your next point, I would not shoot a model if I wasn't satisfied she was over 18, period. Safe levels or no. That's how I choose to work. Some place their complete trust in the Reference system, regarding it as a Gold Standard Currency. That is their preogative. I have mine and I personally do not unequivocally trust the Reference system in isolation.

Anyone with the fortune to look young is asked for ID when buying controlled substances such as tobacco or liquor. I see asking for ID as nothing less than very sensible due dilligence.

Yep, her.  I do wonder if people like the paedophile hunter Stinson Hunter run honey traps on here. For those unitiated, Stinson poses as an underage girl on various platforms, honey-trapping undesirables into a meet-up. However, of course, when they get there they're greeted not by a minor, but Stinson's team who then effectively make a citizen's arrest until the authorities turn up. He was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary about ten years ago and has spawned a string of vigilante copycats.

My guess it was a model or photographer hoping to out photographers here, particularly after the last post about whether it was appropriate for under 18's to be on this site.

I was in fact, wondering if we need a honey trap as you seem to be doing an admirable job all by yourself!  (Tongue firmly in cheek)

Why, are you suggesting that I need honey trapping?  If so, I'm sure you've raised that with the appropriate people?

No, rather I was suggesting that you seem to be a pretty effective honey trap yourself!  :-)

Fair enough.  I'll take that.  The way I first read it took me aback some.

It's fine, no harm done. :)

I remember speaking to a model profile about a tfp shoot, I knew something was odd when she was very positive about travelling to the UK and making no money. Things seemed to go quiet when I asked her to bring I.D. I wouldn't be surprised if it's photographers setting up fake profiles, that account was soon self deactivated not removed.

I never ask for I.D to be sent over online if required but they have to bring it to the shoot.

This model I wrote to had no uniform issue on her portfolio , I feel I have to add this so we don't confuse her with any other suspect account mentioned.
