Drag and Drop? Copy and Paste?

One of the major bugbears I have with this site is the inability (or at least for me) to easily transfer images to parts of the site.

Some sections require you to know the url of an image before you can point the system towards it.

I know that I'm old and stupid, but is there any way that copy and paste, or drag and drop can be implemented for the site as a whole please?

Or can somone point me towards a simple and idiot proof method of easily sending images that aren't uploaded to other members, sections of the site and so on?

Thanks, and I await the usual scorn and ridicule that seems to be part of using the discussion pages.

Be specific. What are you trying to do? The answers we give can then be tailored to your needs rather than making assumptions which perhaps aren't relevant to you.

Also important: what type of device are you using?

At a guess, are you trying to include an image in a message?

To send an image that is not already uploaded, you would first need to either host it on another site and link to it, or upload it to this site and share the link. You can only add images that are already online. It's easy enough to upload an image to your portfolio and use the 'hide from portfolio' option, which allows you to share it in the forum or a message without displaying it publicly in your portfolio, as with the image below.

Forums are web-based platforms, and to display an image, the image file needs to be hosted on a server that is accessible through the internet. When the image is hosted online, it gets a URL (web address), which allows the forum to retrieve and display it. unlike messenger P2P apps forums are not real time person to person communications and do not work that way.

Perhaps I have not been very specific.

I know that it is possible to include images in messages and other areas of the site, but what I am actually asking is; why can't it be made easier to do, such as with drag and drop, or copy and paste?

I'm using a desktop, but the notion would be just as relevant with a laptop.

That's one of the things.

I've had problems with inserting images into posts too.

Thanks for taking time to give such a decent explanation.

But I'm actually asking why it can't be made simpler, and more in line with the operating systems to be found on computing devices.

Desktop/laptop, as opposed to a mobile.  That helps :)  (The basic operations available - and how to do them - are vastly different on a phone/tablet)

I suspect you might have half answered your question.  Maybe it can, but perhaps the site ownership doesn't think the benefit (to the site, not explicitly the users) worth the effort?

Because the technologies are very different.  A PC has the OS providing all sorts of functionality to applications, which can then use it in the ways that they want with very little effort on the part of the application developer.

A web interface, such as we have here, has to re-implement much of that.  Worse, it then has to do it for a PC, for a Mac, for a range of different browsers (some of which have different programming interfaces and support different sub-sets of features), and then also for a phone or a tablet (again for a range of different browsers) where the input method is primarily through a touch on the screen rather than a mouse or a keyboard.

I hope that explains the why.

My thoughts entirely.

Why make something easy when a really unhelpful system exists already?

Because it would take super grade servers to adapt a P2P framework allowing instant upload and message saving interface, in short the issue is money and space. this is the way the site works.

When you go to your image page, go to the cogwheel. Select "Share image URL" and choose bottom option. This copies the URL to paste into Group posts, messages etc.

Well, you say that, and I would confess that I have little sympathy for tablet or phone useage, but on my phone, I can copy and paste, forward, and loads of other things (so my daughter tells me) very easily.

I've also used Macs, and I really don't see the problem.

Are you talking about drag & drop from your computer, or drag & drop from another part of the site?

The site allows direct uploads from your computer to three specific places:

  • Your portfolio
  • Competitions
  • Support tickets

To allow uploads directly into a message to someone else would result in questions of ownership, expiry, storage and so on, so the site's design does not allow it.  Russ does not have the resources of Facebook or Google to be able to store everything that people send each other forever, and even if he did he'd then have to allow people to remove them when they wanted to, including removing a message from someone else's Inbox.  The question is very complex, and not just technically.

It quite probably is quite complex.

But it rather seems to me that these things are as complex as you wish to make them.

There are certainly issues, just about all of which can be negated with a simple line or two in the site rules.

I very much suspect that if you asked the same question of a managerial person, and then an IT employee, you would get very different answers.

I somewhat suspect that the bottom line in this issue is that the site doesn't really want to be bothered, for whatever reason.

But thanks for the responses.
