Smartphone only competition?

Photography is about the image, not the camera - which is precisely why competitions should not be restricted to one camera type or another. If smartphones, why not large format? or pinholes? or any other neglected/ under-rated or simply different device?

Meanwhile "snobbery" about smartphones is in my opinion entirely justifiable. Being able to click a button and take a picture of generally modest quality using a bunch of software tools to sort it out for you doesn't really compare with the finer art and craft of photography. I'm tempted to say that digital cameras do not sit far behind that line either.

If you keep on this track you’ll have us back to painting as the only ‘pure’ representational art. Then we’ll be debating whether ‘painting by numbers’ or ‘colouring in’ (Banksy eat your heart out) count. Then on to acrylic vs oils vs water colours. I disagree with Marshall McLuhan as far as photography goes. The image, not the medium, is the message.

interestingly this will be a competition you may or could actually see models enterning with images they have taken not just photographers :-)
