Two Constructive Suggestions Concerning Competitions

1. The current image settings on the competitions page give greater prominence to vertical format thumbnails. Could the display settings perhaps be altered so as to show images the same size on screen, whether vertical or horizontal? It would level the playing field somewhat.

2. I forget to vote. I get e-mail reminders, but because I have more than one e-mail account I don't always see the reminders until too late. Could a reminder to vote be sent to those who have entered via the PP notifications instead (perhaps with an on-off toggle option)?

Perhaps lets try not disqualifying people for not voting and see how it goes.

20% of people didn't vote yesterday!  But plenty of people did.  60% of my vote didn't count!!

Try it for a month, see if people stop voting?

Hello LifeModel :)

You can enable Competition alerts, and this will send you an onsite notification reminding you to vote:

  • Go to your onsite notifications bubble (top left)
  • Click Customise
  • Tick Competition alerts (under the heading Competitions)
  • Click Save

Thanks Laura, I'll do that.

Any thoughts on getting the images to display on an equal footing?

On portrait / landscape fairness, one solution could be a square thumbnail as in many other places.

I absolutely agree with the thumbnail suggestions - I definitely find my eye drawn to the portrait images rather than the landscape ones which puts me off entering that type of orientated image :)

The multiplicity of interfaces and deliberate resistance to users controlling what is presented to them - part of the enshitification of commerce and the 'Net - is one of the underlying problems.

I've just been trying to book a flight - "enshitification" is a term I'll hang on to.

Another vote from me for equalising the area of thumbnails (maybe a common long side dimension?)

A quick look at the last 50 winners, and only 8 are horizontal. Ie 84% are vertical or square. This is probably also a bit self fulfilling as I know I don’t enter horizontal images if I can help it and if others are also doing this then there’s a smaller pool of horizontal images to vote for.

Harder to do on a phone view which is heavily width restricted.

"Initially, vendors create high-quality offerings to attract users, then they degrade those offerings to better serve business customers, and finally degrade their services to users and business customers to maximize profits for shareholders.
Writer Cory Doctorow coined the neologism "enshittification" in November 2022, though he was not the first to describe and label the concept. The American Dialect Society selected it as its 2023 Word of the Year."

I have used the word "WebShite" to describe sites where that has happened for rather longer :-)

Perhaps webshite is one end-product of the process.

Doctorow's coinage made it into the OEDBlast year, IIRC.
