In this hands-on, one-day workshop, we study the many forms of photographic portraiture. From classic fine art to more contemporary styles, we cover everything you need to reflect the mood and personality of your subject. An essential part of the course is also about communicating and directing your subject, whether a professional model or an inexperienced sitter.
Before we get stuck into shooting, the morning session begins with the simple question: what is a portrait? With reference to a variety of different portraits and winning competition images, we explore the photographic style in detail. During this session, you will consider the many purposes of the genre from beauty portrait to character study, classic headshot to environmental portraiture. You will learn how purpose has a critical effect on the choices you make, from lighting to lens and everything in between.
We also cover the importance of effective communication. Talking with your subject gives you the opportunity for subtle analysis. It helps you decide on the optimum pose and camera angle to capture character, enhance physical attributes or disguise aspects of a sitter’s appearance that they may not like. In simple terms, getting to know someone is a necessary part of the portrait process so we devote a certain amount of time to the subject.
By about midday, you will be ready to begin the practical, hands-on element of the your day’s training. You will photograph both a male and a female subject and, with a maximum of 8 photographers on the course, there is plenty of individual shoot time. You will receive group and personal instruction on the following specifics:
- Actors headshots
- Classic male and female portraits
- Commercial headshots
- Lighting patterns
- Creating natural light with studio flash
- Selecting modifiers
- Using reflectors
- Low and high key
- Studying face shapes
- Lens selection
