Jewellery can transport your images to a whole new level, and really take your portraits up a notch. It can pack a punch and be full-on large impact pieces or it can be small and sweet, subtly enhancing your shot. Either way, jewellery can add a fun, new dimension to your photos, and it's definitely something to consider adding.

Some things to keep in mind when photographing jewellery on a model:

-  Have a strong idea of your target lifestyle feeling for your image; is it proud self-confidence, is it youthful, playful, sexy? Discuss in your briefing with the client/model or just yourself about what kind of mood you'd like to convey.

-  Relevant clothing choices. Do they work with the style/colours of the jewellery or mood of the photoshoot?

-  Sensible lighting choices. Does it complement or distract from your jewellery?

Makeup and styling decisions. Is a certain style appropriate? Does it elevate or diminish your overall look and feel?

-  Shoot various formats, various crops, don't just shoot portrait or landscape. Think about the potential uses of your shots, is it magazine or poster appropriate?

Below I've collected some of the PurplePort Community's best bejewelled imagery, take a look and get inspired!

#1

Remember that when the model looks down the lens, the image becomes a portrait of them and not the jewellery. If you want to keep the focus on the jewellery get the model to look away or down at their body. In this instance, the model's natural-toned makeup and styling help balance the amount of jewellery she has on

#2

Keep it focused. The simple block tone of the eyeshadow harmonizes with and compliments the pearls and jewels

#3

The interesting background creates a narrative for the image and seems to mimic the model and jewellery themselves

#4

The lack of clothing and muted, casual styling of the hair accommodates the loud accessories and makeup

#5

Keep it simple and sleek. The black backdrop and black t-shirt compliment this simple piece of jewellery perfectly

#6

Create drama and movement with messy hair and makeup

#7

A smile can lighten heavy jewellery and give it a playful feel

#8

The back can be a wonderful canvas

#9

Body jewellery mirroring the movements of the body

#10

Soft yet dramatic lighting creates depth and texture and transports this image to another time and place

#11

Complementary colour pairs create a striking contrast

#12

The makeup, earrings and clothing are all speaking to each other

#13

Big and bold can accentuate the proportions of the body even further

#14

Accessories can still pop and steal the show in B&W

#15

Body landscapes can focus our eye on the intricacies and details of the jewellery

#16

Playful pose and colour pop can change the pace

#17

A strong gaze puts the focus back on the model and her story

#18

Playing with materials and texture to shift the focus

#19

Styled props can add another dimension to your shoot when chosen and placed thoughtfully

#20

Be brave and have fun with it

#21

Play with movement and styling to complement the model and accessories

#22

Simple yet stylish clothing choices can really elevate the look of your image

#23

Put the focus on one area and get creative

#24

Play around with contrasting colour and texture

#25

Experiment, find intriguing relationships between your lighting and materials

#26

Have a strong look or theme that your accessories complement

#27

Get creative, have fun, and blur the lines of what conventional accessories are

#28

Use bold shapes and textures to juxtapose your model and their adornments

#30

Play with perspective with close-ups

#31

Create a bold colour scheme

#32

Use unusual statement pieces wisely to find that edgy place

#33

Keeping it simple with the colour scheme can also work in your favour

#34

Using luxurious textures can create that quality finish on your images

#35

Simple styling can allow the jewellery to speak for itself and create an unadulterated impact

#36

Keeping light soft and natural can really accentuate the styling and accessories

#37

Being bold and confrontational can work

#38

Being creative and unconventional can really set your images apart and give them an edge
