Is there a reason why PP's spell-checker uses US English, so words like programme and colour are highlighted as being incorrect, but program and color are OK?

It doesn't.
"color" has a squiggly underline for me. "Colour" does not. It's your PC/Browser settings. :)
Can I change it on Firefox or would I have to swap to an alternative browser?
If you're on Windows, go into your control panel and check out "Regional and Language Options". Check in there that everything is "English (United Kingdom)" or "English-UK", or whatever. There's at least 4 different places in there where you can/need to set it to the UK for everything to work as expected. :)
Had a look, all the options I can find are set to "English (United Kingdom)".
No spellchecker at all on my PP, do you need to activate it? if so where and how?
I tried all the above in Firefox to no avail and then found that if you Right click in a "Text Box" (where you write your posts in PP) then click on Languages, you can select English/United Kingdom. If you don't have that, you may have to go to Add Ons and find an English UK Dictionary but it should be there already.
Just going into Options and putting UK English as your first option, is not enough, I had to change it as described above as well.
Hope this helps....now I have colour with no wavy red line!

It'll be built into your browser, Tony. What are you using?
Internet Explorer 9
Spellchecker works in everything else but not on here.
I wouldn't bother too much but I am Dyslexic (Dyslexia was not recognised when I was at school, it was just a smack round the head for being lazy). A spellchecker does not solve all my problems but it does help.
Any help on locating it would be great.

www.iespell.com is a good add on and works on forums like this / facebook etc
